Role Overview
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at AMAPCEO is charged with overseeing the comprehensive operational and financial management of the organization. The role ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality, member-oriented services while steering strategic planning and governance activities. The COO provides leadership and advisory support to the Senior Management Team and multiple business units, overseeing human resources and labour relations to uphold organizational efficiency and long-term vitality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead AMAPCEO’s yearly strategic planning cycle, monitor progress, and evaluate organizational goals.
- Support governance functions, including operational reporting, logistics for governance meetings, and policy oversight for governing bodies.
- Perform Ombudsperson duties by addressing complaints and facilitating resolutions, including accommodations during large union events.
- Collaborate with senior management to set priorities, define performance targets, and maintain service excellence across all divisions.
- Manage budgeting, financial controls, and resource stewardship with prudence.
- Ensure efficient operation of IT infrastructure, databases, and administrative support systems.
- Oversee delivery of membership services, educational initiatives, communications, workplace advisory, dispute resolution, and collective bargaining support.
- Continuously assess organizational structure, service models, staffing levels, and technology to foster ongoing improvement.
- Lead human resources and labour relations, managing employee and staff labour matters through collaborative senior management leadership.
- Implement organizational development, staff succession planning, and professional growth opportunities.
- Negotiate and manage collective agreements affecting staff and management-excluded employees.
- Cultivate a workplace culture grounded in respect, inclusivity, collaboration, accountability, and collegiality.
- Guide AMAPCEO’s Senior Management Team, providing strategic direction and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Directly supervise the Senior Management Team, Research division, and Executive Assistant, encouraging performance excellence and professional development.
Candidate Qualifications
- Proven experience in governance and strategic leadership, including board support and strategic plan implementation.
- Senior-level executive experience within large, membership-based organizations, preferably labour unions, working closely with boards.
- Demonstrated leadership in complex unionized settings with strong staff labour relations expertise.
- Strong ability to quickly establish effective relationships with elected officials, management, and employees.
- Exceptional analytical skills to interpret complex data and provide strategic recommendations.
- Excellent judgment, political insight, diplomacy, and tact in managing diverse stakeholder interests under pressure.
- Leadership style characterized by integrity, collaboration, delegation, empowerment, and commitment to staff development.

Work Location: AMAPCEO Office, 1 Dundas Street West, Suite 2310, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Travel: Some travel and occasional work beyond regular hours may be necessary.
