Building Security Control Technician

Position Summary

The Building Security Control Technician (BSCT) plays a critical role in safeguarding provincially owned or leased buildings and associated properties by monitoring security and fire systems, conducting patrols, and delivering emergency medical assistance when necessary.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitor building systems including fire and security alarms using specialized computer terminals and equipment.
• Conduct regular patrols to ensure the security of buildings, assets, and infrastructure, guarding against hazards including theft, trespassing, fire, and vandalism.
• Manage access to buildings for employees, visitors, and contractors.
• Investigate suspicious activities and persons, taking appropriate action as required.
• Execute preliminary inquiries into incidents such as theft, vandalism, disturbances, intrusions, and fire alarms.
• Carry out visual inspections of mechanical and electrical areas.
• Maintain accurate shift logs and complete detailed reports.
• Enforce parking regulations and control traffic, including issuing parking tickets as per Transportation and Infrastructure guidelines.
• Appear in court when necessary to provide testimony or reports.
• Deliver emergency medical aid consistent with Advanced Medical First Responder Level I standards.
• Oversee Control Desk operations as part of shift duties.
• Perform additional tasks assigned by management.

Candidate Requirements

• Completion of high school education supplemented by a recognized diploma in Law Enforcement or Security Administration; equivalencies will be considered.
• Possession of a valid Advanced Medical First Responder Level I Certification.
• Relevant experience working in security within large public facilities.
• Proficiency with computer-based monitoring systems for building operations.

• Thorough knowledge of security and safety procedures, including traffic control.
• Ability to effectively communicate information both verbally and in writing.
• Competence in preparing detailed incident, accident, and shift documentation.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the capacity to make judicious decisions independently, especially under tension or confrontation.
• Capability to assess complex situations and prioritize competing demands in a dynamic setting.
• Demonstrated teamwork and professionalism in the workplace.

Employment Conditions

• Must hold a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 Driver's License and provide a satisfactory current driver’s abstract.
• Candidates are required to participate in a rotating schedule covering 24/7 shifts including weekends and holidays.
• The role involves significant physical activity such as prolonged standing, walking, patrolling, enforcement duties, snow removal, and travel between sites, often in varying and adverse weather.
• Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors.
• Wearing uniforms and personal safety equipment like safety boots, hard hats, safety vests, safety glasses, and other protective gear is mandatory as required.
