Overview
This role is based across several Nottingham locations including NPS 106 Raleigh Street, NPS 5-7 Astral Grove, and NPS Trent House. As a valued member of the Probation Service, Residential Workers are part of a dedicated team working around the clock to provide support and supervision to residents within Approved Premises. This position offers strong training opportunities, flexible shifts, Civil Service benefits, and a chance to contribute meaningfully to community safety.
Work Locations and Patterns
Applicants must be flexible to work across any of the specified Approved Premises and adapt to varied shift patterns. Positions include Fulltime Peripatetic Residential Workers covering multiple sites within a local cluster, as well as Fulltime or Part-time Residential Workers assigned to a specific Premises. Work consists of a 37-hour average week with 12-hour shifts on weekdays and weekends, including both day shifts starting at 8am and night shifts at 8pm in a 7-week rotating schedule. Annualised hour work options include 625 or 1250 hours per year, roughly one or two 12-hour shifts weekly, consisting of standard and unsocial hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate effectively within a team ensuring consistency and a positive environment.
- Communicate crucial risk-related information promptly with colleagues and partner agencies such as Offender Managers, Police, and health services.
- Conduct regular security inspections and monitor CCTV equipment throughout shifts.
- Maintain visible presence and engage constructively with residents to support their wellbeing and adherence to risk and sentence plans.
- Manage behaviours of high-risk residents, applying appropriate measures for compliance and challenging aggression if necessary.
- Ensure premises security during curfew and confirm resident welfare overnight.
- Act as emergency contact point after hours and provide accurate reports on resident behaviour and risks.
- Implement health and safety protocols, including fire and curfew checks, room searches, and medication administration aligned with procedures.
- Support residents' activities linked to their sentence plans, including meal supervision and inductions.
- Respond to incidents including administering First Aid and managing safeguarding responsibilities.
- Maintain accurate records, complete incident reports, and oversee visitor and contractor compliance with safety standards.
- Model pro-social behaviors, reinforcing positive conduct and addressing anti-social attitudes.
Required Experience and Skills
- Experience engaging with individuals facing various social and personal challenges.
- High level of literacy and numeracy demonstrated by a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths, or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Competency using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Additional Details
Roles require substantial out-of-hours commitment including weekend and waking night duties. Staff receive additional payment for unsocial hours worked. Residential Workers do not transfer to roles with different job descriptions such as Prison Support Officers. Successful candidates must complete relevant criminal record and baseline security checks.
