About the team

Security is central to OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits everyone. The security organization is responsible for protecting the company’s technology, workforce, and products. It blends technical depth with operational execution and supports products as well as research. Its guiding principles include focusing on high-impact work, enabling researchers, preparing for future transformative technologies, and fostering a strong security culture.

About the role

In this position, you will help safeguard OpenAI’s most sensitive assets, such as intellectual property, customer information, and the infrastructure that supports them. Your work will involve designing and running the systems used to spot suspicious activity and to respond quickly and effectively when incidents occur. You will collaborate across endpoints, identity, cloud, large-scale compute, and datacenter-adjacent environments, working with security and infrastructure teams to define the telemetry and response capabilities needed, and building tooling and automation where it provides the greatest impact.

Key responsibilities

  • Grow and mature detection and response capabilities across infrastructure, products, and research environments, with an emphasis on strong signal quality and dependable incident handling.
  • Create and improve detection pipelines and related tooling, including rule lifecycle processes, coverage and precision measurement, latency tracking, tuning workflows, and controlled rollout methods.
  • Reduce manual effort in triage, enrichment, containment, and evidence collection by automating investigations and response workflows, improving the speed of understanding and containment.
  • Work closely with other security groups and infrastructure owners so that new systems launch with the correct telemetry, threat models, and response playbooks from the outset.
  • Identify telemetry and control gaps across endpoints, identity, SaaS, cloud, and Kubernetes environments, prioritize remediation, advocate for fixes, and implement solutions directly when that is the most effective route.
  • Assess and address new security risks in a frontier AI lab setting, including approaches for detecting and responding to agents operating across systems at scale.

What you should bring

  • Practical experience in threat detection and/or incident response, including creating detections, conducting investigations, and improving response playbooks.
  • Strong understanding of modern attacker techniques and the ability to turn those techniques into actionable detections and response steps.
  • A threat-modeling mindset, with the ability to review new infrastructure or features, identify what could go wrong, determine what visibility is needed, and translate that into requirements for engineering teams.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerized systems, including building detections from cluster telemetry and recognizing common workload, node, control-plane, and networking issues and attack patterns.
  • Comfort working with lower-level infrastructure and datacenter-related risks, including firmware and BMC surfaces, network segmentation and telemetry, and difficult-to-observe control paths.
  • Exposure to major cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, GCP, and OCI, with the ability to design detection approaches that can work across clouds.
  • Ability to build automation that removes repetitive detection and response tasks, including thoughtful use of agent-style workflows where they measurably improve efficiency while remaining safe, auditable, and measurable.
  • Interest in emerging problem spaces at a fast-moving technology company, including how to detect and respond to agents operating across systems at scale and turn those ideas into practical telemetry and response needs.
  • Clear communication and strong collaboration skills, with the ability to express detection and response needs clearly, align stakeholders, and drive execution across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Comfort with scripting and using AI or agent-based tools to speed up investigations and automation, with a preference for directing systems rather than performing every task manually.
