Role overview

Queensland’s Biosecurity Queensland team is seeking a Project Officer (Spatial) to contribute to the protection of the state’s environment, biodiversity, industries, human and animal health, and economy. This role supports the Invasive Plants and Animals program, which focuses on reducing the impact of invasive species through targeted action and strong stakeholder collaboration.

In this position, you will help deliver spatial and GIS services that support operational teams, compliance work, data analysis, science, and management. The work is hands-on and varied, with a clear purpose: helping safeguard Queensland from a serious invasive pest threat.

Key duties

  • Set up, maintain, and provide technical support for desktop and web-based GIS applications, including geoprocessing tasks, cartographic mapping, and the preparation of standard and tailored maps using approved templates and industry practices.
  • Support multiple program areas by producing GIS outputs and maps, while also guiding spatial project support staff and assisting ArcGIS users with technical advice.
  • Manage the upload of field GPS data, coordinate related data handling, and make sure all outputs meet the required quality and assurance standards.

Experience and qualification notes

  • Around two years of experience working in GIS and handling spatial information with ESRI ArcGIS Pro is expected, along with experience using GPS data.
  • A current C class driver licence is required.
  • Tertiary study in GIS or a related field would be viewed positively, especially if combined with an interest in spatial technologies and experience in spatial modelling.

Why this role may suit you

  • You will work on meaningful projects with visible impact.
  • The role offers varied and interesting work across several program areas.
  • You will be part of a collaborative team with flexibility and support to help you succeed.
  • The position sits within a wider diverse department focused on public value and biosecurity outcomes.
