About the Role

Intertek Italia is looking for an experienced Fitness-For-Service Mechanical Integrity Engineer to support upcoming work on brownfield EPC modifications, revamp initiatives, and operational integrity activities across several energy assets in Germany. The position centers on assessing existing equipment, aging systems, and equipment that is already in service in order to guide decisions on rerating, tie-ins, life extension, defect evaluation, and overall mechanical integrity.

The engineer will act as a technical lead for API 579 / ASME FFS-1 evaluations and mechanical integrity work. All conclusions and recommendations must stand up technically, meet international code requirements, and align with client integrity expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Level 1 and Level 2 API 579 fitness-for-service assessments for metal loss, pitting, local thin areas, crack-type flaws, dents, gouges, creep, and high-temperature degradation on operating assets.
  • Assess remaining life, determine safe operating limits, and provide engineering guidance on continued operation, derating, or repair.
  • Review inspection and NDT results from both conventional and advanced methods, then connect those findings to the applicable damage mechanism.
  • Support Level 3 evaluations when required by using stress analysis and finite element analysis tools.
  • Perform mechanical integrity reviews for pressure vessels, piping, tanks, and other static equipment, including rerating, repair justification, and modification assessments.
  • Assess older equipment for revamp, tie-in, and reuse decisions during brownfield EPC work.
  • Examine past inspection records, operating history, and EPC documents to confirm the data used in FFS and mechanical integrity studies.
  • Advise on repair strategies, temporary repair solutions, and life-extension measures in line with API 579, API 510, API 570, and ASME requirements.
  • Support RBI activities by checking degradation mechanisms, probability-of-failure inputs, inspection plans, and risk-ranking logic.
  • Draft detailed FFS reports, technical justifications, and recommendations for client asset integrity and EPC stakeholders.
  • Work closely with corrosion, mechanical, process, and inspection teams to close data gaps and keep all disciplines aligned.
  • Make sure all FFS work complies with API 579 / ASME FFS-1, ASME VIII, ASME B31.3, API 510, API 570, and the client’s standards.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Metallurgy, or a similar discipline is required; a master’s degree in Mechanical Integrity or a related subject is a plus.
  • Solid hands-on background in mechanical integrity engineering, including rerating, repair evaluation, and integrity management for static equipment.
  • At least 5 years of proven experience carrying out fitness-for-service assessments.
  • Experience using software or tools for Level 2 and Level 3 assessments.
  • API 579 training and demonstrated ability to perform FFS assessments are mandatory.
  • API 510 and/or API 570 certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of API 571 is useful for matching damage mechanisms to observed degradation.
