Role overview
Lowe’s is hiring a Data Scientist in Charlotte, NC to support analytics and data science work across key business initiatives. In this role, you will help solve complex problems with guidance from senior teammates, contribute to internal data science support, and assist in creating automated self-service tools that help business partners interpret data and build data products.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain forecasting and machine learning models for demand planning, inventory optimization, and business forecasting.
- Help develop item-location demand forecasts using time series methods, machine learning, and statistical techniques.
- Support forecasting work tied to promotions, seasonality, and trend shifts in demand.
- Assist with estimating promotional impact on demand through basic uplift analysis and feature creation for promotional signals.
- Partner with senior data scientists on advanced forecasting methods such as ARIMA, Prophet, and machine learning-based approaches.
- Contribute to hierarchical forecasting methods, including top-down and bottom-up strategies, with direction from senior team members.
- Pull, clean, and organize large datasets for analysis and model development.
- Work with analysts, engineers, and product stakeholders to convert business needs into data science solutions.
- Help identify the reasons for forecast variance and improve accuracy through tuning and performance review.
- Support the release and monitoring of machine learning models in production.
- Assist in creating scalable, automated forecasting pipelines using cloud tools and big data frameworks.
- Keep up with new machine learning and forecasting approaches and apply them as directed.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, economics, engineering, computer science, data, information science, or a similar quantitative field, or equivalent experience in place of the education requirement where allowed.
- 2 years of experience delivering data science, machine learning, deep learning, or generative AI solutions, preferably in a large enterprise setting; fewer years may be accepted with a master’s or doctorate.
- 1 year of experience with SQL and programming; fewer years may be accepted with a master’s or doctorate.
Preferred background
- Master’s degree in a quantitative analytic field such as mathematics, statistics, physics, economics, engineering, computer science, data, or information science.
- 1 year of experience working across multiple data systems and sources.
- 1 year of experience collaborating with cross-functional partners.
- Exposure to forecasting or demand planning in retail, supply chain, or e-commerce.
- Working knowledge of time series forecasting methods such as ARIMA, Prophet, or regression-based approaches.
- Basic familiarity with machine learning models such as XGBoost, Random Forest, or GLM.
- Exposure to big data tools such as Spark, PySpark, or cloud environments like GCP, AWS, or Azure.
- Familiarity with ML workflow tools such as MLflow, Vertex AI, or similar tools is a plus.
- Understanding of forecast evaluation measures such as MAPE, MAE, or RMSE.
- Experience in collaborative, cross-functional environments.

Compensation
The annual pay range for this role is $75,300 to $143,100. Starting pay may differ depending on the position offered, location, education, training, and/or experience.
