Solids Control Field Technician

Role Summary

Reporting to the Field Leader(s), the Solids Control Field Technician supports the mechanical processes used in closed-loop and other mud systems to improve drilling operations and recover drilling fluid. The role includes hands-on training on specialized Stage 3 equipment.

This is a safety-sensitive position. Technicians work 12-hour shifts on a 14-days-on / 7-days-off rotation, with schedules varying by site. Work is project-based at remote locations across Canada, while hiring is handled through the Calgary office.

Key Duties

• Work assigned rotations of 14 days on and 7 days off, with schedules depending on the project location.
• Complete 12-hour shifts, including overtime when needed.
• Work swing shifts from 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM or 12:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with training and shadowing alongside an experienced technician and field leader.
• Travel within Canada to remote job sites as required.
• Support one or more projects as assigned.
• Learn to rig up and rig down equipment.
• Operate solids control equipment such as shaker tanks, centrifuges, drying units, and pumps.
• Build working knowledge of environmental services and related practices.
• Develop a basic understanding of electrical principles.
• Learn drilling fluid properties, including fluid weight, funnel viscosity, retort analysis, and similar testing, and carry out fluid analysis.
• Assist with solids control services such as air drilling, barite recovery, de-watering, floc water, fluid transfers, low-gravity solids control, and cuttings drying/invert recovery.
• Perform routine maintenance and basic electrical tasks on equipment.
• Operate heavy machinery safely and efficiently under supervision.
• Keep work areas clean using pressure-washing equipment.
• Participate in daily safety meetings.
• Complete PJRA/JSA documents, inspection reports, observation reports, and checklists as required.
• Wear the required personal protective equipment at all times on site.
• Follow all safety rules and protocols consistently.
• Carry out other assigned duties as needed, which may change without notice.

• Willingness to obtain safety credentials such as H2S, WHMIS, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and CPR/First Aid.
• Prepared to work outdoors in cold, wet, and hot conditions.
• Ability to live away from home for 14 days or more during rotation periods.
• Responsible for keeping shared accommodations clean and orderly.
• Ability to read, write, and understand English.
• Expected to progress to Field Level 1 after completing performance evaluation and competency testing.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• A 2-year associate degree or technical diploma in Technology, Electronics, Mechanics, or a related area is preferred.
• Prior forklift, excavator, or wheel loader experience or certifications are preferred; training will be provided before site work begins.
• Basic experience with Microsoft Office, including Outlook.
• Valid provincial driver’s license, valid insurance, and a driving record with low to zero demerits.
• Must hold a valid license equivalent to Class 5 in AB/BC/SK or Class G in Ontario, or the equivalent in another province or territory.
• As a safety-sensitive role, pre-employment drug and alcohol testing may be required.

Experience Requirements

• At least 1 year of solids control experience is required.
• 1 or more years of experience in dewatering or water-based mud/transfer work is required.
• Experience with shaker tanks, centrifuges, drying equipment, and pumps is preferred.
• Heavy equipment experience, such as forklifts, excavators, or wheel loaders, is preferred.
• Previous certifications such as WHMIS, H2S, CPR/First Aid, or LOTO are preferred.
• A basic understanding of drilling fluid properties is preferred.

Additional Information

This role is based from the Calgary office, but the actual work takes place at remote sites across Canada. It is a safety-sensitive position, and the work environment may include shared living quarters during rotations.
