Senior Mechanical Engineer

Role Overview

This position involves leading mechanical design and engineering activities for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. The work spans equipment selection, piping and utility design, layout development, technical review, vendor coordination, and support across procurement and project execution.

Core Responsibilities

• Choose and size mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, lifting systems, penstocks, tanks, pressure vessels, and related piping items like pipes, fittings, valves, and strainers.
• Prepare technical data sheets and equipment/specification documents for RFQ packages.
• Draft RFQs, assess supplier quotations, compare technical proposals, and advise procurement teams on the best option.
• Create plant layouts with utilities and produce GA drawings and piping layouts for STP, WTP, and ETP process buildings.
• Design piping networks using GRP, ductile iron, HDPE, uPVC, stainless steel, and carbon steel for both above-ground and buried runs.
• Carry out stress checks for critical pipelines using CAESAR II and prepare load schedules for pipe support design.
• Perform hydraulic calculations for cross-country and in-plant pipelines.
• Develop cross-country pipeline and steel pipe designs in line with standards such as AWWA M11, ASME codes, and other applicable guidelines.
• Run surge studies using Bentley WaterHammer.
• Develop distribution network models in WaterGEMS.
• Support L-section drawing preparation in CIVIL 3D and assist in generating 3D models for process buildings.
• Examine drawings and 3D models to confirm design accuracy and compliance with requirements.
• Coordinate with clients and consultants to secure approvals for design deliverables.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to keep project execution aligned and efficient.
• Design pumping stations including raw water intake systems, clear water pump houses, and treated water pumping stations for STP projects in accordance with CPHEEO guidelines and Hydraulic Institute standards.
• Perform detailed mechanical engineering for piping and utility systems in water and wastewater treatment plants as per ASME B31.3 and relevant Indian standards.

Technical Scope

The role covers both specialized equipment engineering and end-to-end piping/utility design for treatment plants and pipeline systems, with exposure to advanced analysis tools, international design codes, and coordination across design, procurement, and client interfaces.

Work Setting

Location: Greater Chennai Area. This is a full-time, onsite position.
