Design Editor

About the Role

A major media brand is seeking a creative and adaptable Design Editor to work in a busy newsroom environment. This position is suited to someone who enjoys building striking visual stories, works comfortably in a digital-first setting, and can translate ideas into engaging designs for web, social, and print. The schedule for this role is Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The organization reaches a very large audience and operates across print, digital, video, audio, apps, television, and commerce. The Design Team plays a central role in shaping how stories are presented across multiple platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Create engaging digital and editorial visuals such as interactive infographics, illustrations, print features, animations for online and social use, composites, and maps.
• Keep up with evolving design trends, tools, and production methods so the team’s output remains current and competitive.
• Partner with senior design leadership to develop original visual concepts that match the publication’s bold brand style.
• Work with editorial teams to blend copy and imagery into clear, compelling storytelling for both digital and print formats.
• Contribute new ideas for visual storytelling with an emphasis on high-impact digital content.
• Manage several assignments at once and deliver work reliably in a fast-moving, deadline-heavy environment.

Requirements

• Advanced working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and After Effects, plus tools such as Flourish and MapCreator.
• Strong digital design ability across web, mobile, and social channels, along with a solid understanding of print design.
• Excellent command of typography, page composition, and visual hierarchy.
• Ability to build charts and data visuals from complex sources like financial reports and press releases, and simplify them for general readers.
• Creative and strategic thinking under pressure and within tight deadlines.
• Strong interest in news, sports, viral culture, pop culture, and fast-moving digital trends.
• Clear communication, strong collaboration, and a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
• Well-developed organizational habits and close attention to detail.
• A portfolio demonstrating a broad range of design work, with particular strength in digital projects.
• Availability to work weekends and holidays when required.
• Basic coding familiarity with HTML, CSS, and Java.

Additional Information

This is an on-site position and requires reporting to the office five days per week.

The base salary range for this role is $65,000 to $85,000. Compensation may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and other relevant factors. For bonus-eligible positions, targets are set using market benchmarks and individual contributions.
