Automation Engineer

Role Overview

The Fermoy, County Cork facility is an FDA-registered site certified to ISO 13485:2016, focused on producing high-quality PCBAs, subassemblies, and complete devices, including Class III medical devices. The operation is centered on manufacturing automation and supports the full product journey from new product introduction and prototyping through process validation, high-volume manufacturing, testing, shipping, and repair. The site has delivered 30 years of strong operational results and customer service, supported by an experienced team.

The purpose of this role is to strengthen automation capability, help secure new business through economical and competitive assembly solutions, and support business development in product development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead and support automation-related work across new and existing products, with involvement in project delivery, customer interaction, technical documentation, and manufacturing improvement.

• Manage new product development and introduction projects when needed.
• Develop automation systems for both new and established products.
• Engage with customers and prospects to present the site's automation capabilities and manufacturing improvements.
• Prepare technical reports, proposals, and production line simulations.
• Collaborate closely with the Corporate Design team on Fermoy product options.
• Support customer visits and contribute directly to customer focus teams.
• Help ensure smooth launch of new products in a high-volume production setting.
• Apply Lean Manufacturing principles in practical ways.
• Track emerging technologies and introduce relevant automation advances to the Fermoy site.
• Lead automation projects from URS development and partner sourcing through build stages to full production release.
• Coordinate with other sites to share automation initiatives and best practices.
• Work with different departments on improvement activities and new business support.
• Assist with engineering builds.
• Provide design-for-manufacturing input for new product developments.
• Support troubleshooting and issue resolution on active production lines when required.
• Maintain compliance with quality systems, industry regulations, health and safety laws, and site procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

• NFQ Level 8 degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Mechatronics, or an automation-related field.
• 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a design or project management engineering role within manufacturing or equipment build environments.
• Strong knowledge of equipment and practical troubleshooting/debugging capability.
• Hands-on experience with design for manufacturing.
• Six Sigma Green Belt or comparable Lean expertise.
• A project management qualification would be an advantage.

• Comfort working in customer-facing situations.
• Solid equipment understanding and troubleshooting ability.
• Familiarity with PLC programming, pneumatics, robotics, product assembly methods, label applicators, laser marking, and tooling design is beneficial.
