The opportunity

This role sits within the Consulting team in Wellington and involves working closely with key government agencies. It is suited to an experienced manager who wants broad exposure to important issues affecting clients in the current business environment.

You will work alongside colleagues across the division, developing new capabilities and building on your existing strengths in a collaborative and high-energy setting. The team supports boards and management in creating governance, risk, and control environments that align with organisational strategy and operations.

What you will do

• Carry out reviews of high-profile projects across multiple sectors in New Zealand, with an emphasis on risk management, process review, and internal controls.
• Take ownership of the planning, execution, and delivery of internal audit work and broader risk consulting assignments.
• Analyse data to spot trends, patterns, and potential weaknesses in processes.
• Recommend practical improvements that increase the effectiveness and efficiency of business processes, systems, and organisational structures.
• Work with technical specialists to design risk and control solutions that are suited to client needs.
• Support the development of junior staff by reviewing their work and giving timely, specific performance feedback.
• Contribute to business growth by identifying opportunities, helping pursue them, shaping thought leadership, supporting client proposals, and strengthening team capability.
• Help enhance KPMG’s reputation through high-quality delivery, sound judgement, subject matter expertise, and innovative thinking.

What you will bring

• Experience in risk, assurance, or internal audit across a range of industries.
• Prior exposure to a professional services firm, government organisation, or the public sector is preferred, though not essential.
• Strong ability to assess information quickly and use creative approaches to solve problems.
• Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, including strong report writing.
• Experience with planning, project management, relationship building, networking, and influencing stakeholders.
• A positive, adaptable attitude and enthusiasm for new challenges and growth opportunities.
• Comfort with ambiguity and confidence to address gaps by asking questions, collaborating, and researching technical and contractual documents.
