Role Summary
The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for keeping traffic moving safely around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. This position includes placing and removing signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, signs, and related traffic control tools to direct drivers safely through or around the work area. The job calls for strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to stand for long periods. This is a non-exempt position.
Key Duties
- Place traffic signs, cones, and other control devices around work zones to redirect vehicles safely.
- Control traffic movement using stop/slow paddles.
- Keep in touch with coworkers through two-way radios to coordinate work safely and efficiently.
- Stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Carry out routine inspections and basic maintenance checks on vehicles.
- Work in outdoor conditions that may include weather exposure, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work in an environment where noise is generally moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Complete other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Background screening is required, including a motor vehicle records check.
- Must pass a drug test and comply with federal DOT requirements.
- Required to use proper safety gear, including work boots with safety toes, a hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
- Should be able to operate a two-way radio.
- Must be willing to work in different weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Needs to communicate effectively with contractors and internal teams while providing strong customer service.
- Should work well as part of a team.
- Must demonstrate reliable attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic.
- Must complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training.
- Must be willing to travel statewide, including occasional overnight trips, and work nights and weekends as project needs require.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
