The Opportunity
An experienced and qualified Shift Engineer is required for the Lorneville Plant in Invercargill. This position is focused on maintaining the safe, dependable, and efficient performance of refrigeration and related plant within a 24/7 operating environment.
Role Overview
As a member of the shift engineering team, you will provide practical technical support, troubleshoot plant issues, and contribute to ongoing improvement work. The role places major emphasis on safety, compliance, and dependable operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Run, observe, and maintain industrial refrigeration systems
- Attend to equipment failures and plant issues during shift hours
- Perform both scheduled and breakdown maintenance tasks
- Keep refrigeration systems operating safely and efficiently
- Help ensure compliance with HSWA, MPI, and environmental obligations
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and written reports
- Partner with production and engineering teams to reduce downtime
- Contribute to reliability and continuous improvement initiatives
About You
You are a hands-on engineer who prioritises safety, works well without close supervision on shift, and can make sensible decisions under pressure.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Formal trade background in Refrigeration, HVAC, or Mechanical Engineering
- Demonstrated experience with industrial refrigeration systems, with ammonia experience strongly preferred
- Well-developed fault-finding and diagnostic ability
- Experience in a shift roster or 24/7 work environment
- Strong commitment to health and safety and safe work practices
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
Desirable Qualifications
- Current EST registration and practising licence
- Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems
- Training in confined spaces, working at heights, or hazardous substances
