Founded in 1946, the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences was created to advance palaeobotany and related earth science studies. Over time, its scope has expanded beyond plant fossil research to include broader palaeosciences, supported by modern research facilities.

Positions and Research Areas

The available roles are Scientist ‘F’, Scientist ‘B’, and Multi-Tasking Staff-I (MTS-I). The research focus is in relevant fields, including biosciences, geology, physics, chemistry, or allied disciplines in Earth Science.

Eligibility Criteria

Scientist ‘F’ applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field with 12 years of experience, or an M.Tech/M.Sc with 16 years of experience in research and development in academic or industrial institutions. Scientist ‘B’ applicants should have an M.Sc or M.Tech in a relevant field with 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field. MTS-I applicants must have passed Matriculation (10th).

Job Responsibilities

Scientist ‘F’ will be expected to lead research and development initiatives, mentor students and research personnel, and contribute to administrative and outreach work. Scientist ‘B’ will carry out research and development work, support academic and administrative tasks, and supervise students and technical staff. MTS-I will assist with laboratory and fieldwork, manage equipment, maintain cleanliness and upkeep of labs, and handle other duties assigned by the supervisor.

General Conditions

Applicants must satisfy all essential requirements and any other conditions mentioned in the advertisement. Shortlisting will be done by a Screening Committee, and only candidates recommended after approval by the Competent Authority will be called for the test and/or interview. The number of posts may change, and the institute may choose not to fill any vacancy. Qualifications, experience, and other requirements may be relaxed or upgraded in the institute’s interest to meet its current research mandate.

Selected candidates will first be placed on a probation period of two years, and continuation will depend on satisfactory completion of probation. Appointees will be covered under the New Pension Scheme and may be transferred across projects, sections, or units at the discretion of the Director. Usual allowances as per institute rules, following Government of India norms, will apply. The institute may correct or update the advertisement before the application deadline in case of typographical errors. It also reserves the right to reject any or all applications without giving reasons.

Any disputes or legal proceedings will fall under the jurisdiction of courts in Lucknow, including District Court Lucknow and the Lucknow Bench of the Hon’ble High Court, Allahabad. Requests to change the date or slot of the personal interview, written test, or skill test will not be entertained. No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview, written examination, or skill test. Incomplete online applications will not be considered.

Application Fee

Scientist ‘F’: Rs. 1000 for Gen/OBC/EWS candidates. Scientist ‘B’: Rs. 1000 for Gen/OBC/EWS candidates. Multi-Tasking Staff-I (MTS-I): Rs. 250 for Gen/OBC/EWS candidates.

Candidates must pay the application fee online using the link provided in the application portal.
