Role overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a Railroad Flagger in Athens, Georgia. This full-time field role is responsible for protecting workers on active rail property by directing train movements and applying the required federal safety standards. The position supports major railroads, regional rail lines, transit agencies, state transportation rail work, and contractor projects.
Reporting and travel
This position reports to the District Manager. Travel is a major part of the job and is expected roughly 50% to 85% of the time on average, including the possibility of extended assignments lasting months.
Compensation
Pay ranges from $25 to $37 per hour depending on experience.
Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day coordination at the worksite.
- Keep communication flowing with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Run safety briefings before field work begins.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal operating rules.
- Confirm that contractors have completed required training.
- Identify and correct safety or rule-compliance issues.
- Prepare daily activity reports.
- Maintain on-track safety in line with federal requirements.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant, preferably in Maintenance of Way (MOW).
- Working knowledge of basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, phone, and texting applications.
- Comfortable using Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of railroad engineering, construction, design, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships.
- Willingness to travel for long stretches, including assignments that may last months.
- Ability to complete required federal, client, and company training.
- Ability to communicate in English clearly in speaking, reading, and writing.
- Prepared to travel or drive long distances as needed.
- Able to stand for extended periods and walk on uneven surfaces.
- Good vision, including near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
- Comfortable working in hot, cold, dusty, and noisy environments.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment and recurring background checks, drug/alcohol screening, and classroom training.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
