Role overview
This position is responsible for keeping the Safety Management System current and effective so that vessel operations consistently align with Flag State rules, applicable laws, and company standards. The role also supports vessel security by staying informed on security developments, relevant intelligence, compliance expectations, and practical countermeasures for vessels.
Systems management
- Drive the NSQL Management System for continual improvement, ensuring it reflects current maritime and shipping industry expectations as well as recognized best practices.
- Apply the company’s international quality system standards and keep the policies and procedures aligned with quality and environmental certification needs, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 45001.
- Keep the NSQL IMS updated without delay by using the company SMS Update System and following the Management of Change process.
- Maintain the company HSE monitoring system so that all required due dates are fully met.
- Create and maintain a process that keeps the company informed about new regulations and legislation, assess how those changes affect operations, and keep the regulatory compliance register current.
- Oversee the timely re-issuance of updated SMS documentation so the fleet remains aligned with the latest company requirements.
- Track the quality and effectiveness of audits and the related submissions.
- Supervise day-to-day TAS deployment, prepare the training plan, and monitor how effective it is.
- Manage TSMA submission, audit, and response activities in line with IMS requirements, ensuring the company IMS remains compliant with EMS requirements.
Vessel safety and security
- Review vessel safety performance and keep up with emerging safety and security issues.
- Advise vessel teams on compliance with safety procedures and provide guidance to support IMS implementation.
Emergency response
- Support the creation and continuous improvement of company emergency response procedures as part of the crisis management team.
- Ensure the emergency response center stays fully updated and ready for use at all times.
- Plan, coordinate, and run emergency response drills and exercises in line with the company’s emergency procedures so readiness is maintained.
Monitoring, audits, and compliance
- Perform internal ISM, ISPS, MLC, cargo, and galley audits on NSQL-managed vessels.
- Ensure all findings, observations, and non-conformances are addressed quickly and formally closed out.
Qualifications and experience
A bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or another equivalent maritime/shipping discipline is required. The role calls for 8 years of relevant Occupational Health & Safety experience, including at least 4 years in the oil and gas shipping sector. Strong exposure to Environmental Management Systems and ISO, ISPS, TMSA, and HSSEQ auditing is also needed.
