Role overview

This position is for a capable mechanical technician and supervisor who will handle detailed maintenance work on Typhoon aircraft and related components. The role requires a strong grasp of approved technical documentation and the ability to oversee maintenance activity within the organisation’s regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate should be able to identify and troubleshoot faults in aircraft systems, equipment, and assemblies, follow diagnostic steps carefully, and contribute effectively as part of a mixed and fast-moving team. The role also includes supporting and coaching less experienced colleagues.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed maintenance, inspection, and supervisory duties on Typhoon aircraft and its components.
  • Confirm that all work is completed against the assigned work package and approved technical data.
  • Investigate and resolve defects and maintenance concerns, including configuration control matters.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and diagnostic tasks on the Typhoon aircraft or components, including ground handling, flight servicing, aircraft role changes, component removal, inspections, repairs, modifications, defect rectification, replacements, and functional or systems testing, as applicable.
  • Show a practical, adaptable, and proactive approach to the duties of the role, while following direction appropriately.
  • Keep personal task authorisations current for work carried out on aircraft or components.
  • Ensure maintenance is completed to the required schedule and escalate issues when needed.
  • Carry out fault assessment and raise additional work cards for defects discovered during maintenance.
  • Lead the team so maintenance remains on schedule, and flag concerns or impacts to the wider programme when they arise.
  • Make sure staff assigned to tasks are suitably competent and approved for the work.
  • Complete support activities within the aircraft or component maintenance facility that are needed to remain compliant with MOE and Functionally Mandated Procedures, including oversight checks and control of tooling and test equipment.
  • Guide and lead team members, support development through formal assessments such as PDRs, and help sponsor training requests including on-the-job training.
  • Use strong communication and people management skills to pass on complex information clearly.
  • Carry out independent and critical inspections when required.
  • Maintain a personal log book to evidence current competence and recency, and sign other personnel’s log books where appropriate within trade and skill limits.
  • If appointed as an approved designated assessor, complete authorisation and competency approvals, and review Pt 145 licence application packs before submission.

Requirements

  • Completion of an engineering apprenticeship, preferably in aeronautical engineering, or an equivalent military apprenticeship/qualification.
  • A minimum academic qualification of City & Guilds 2675 or 2661 in Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance, or an equivalent credential.
  • Aircraft platform training is required.
  • Strong and broad technical knowledge within the relevant specialist area.
  • Understanding of how the team works with other functions to achieve area objectives, along with awareness of continuous improvement practices.
  • Previous experience in a leadership capacity at this level, including at least 2 years working at technician level before stepping into a supervisor role.
  • Evidence of experience, current competency, and recent practice through a log book covering skills, knowledge, and authorisations for aircraft or bay work.
  • Practical experience applying aviation safety standards and safe working practices.
  • Good knowledge of expositions and Functionally Mandated Procedures.
  • Management training and PDR training or experience.
  • Ability to follow personal compliance requirements for risk assessments, SHE policies, and procedures.
