Role Overview
The Electrodeposition (ED) Sanding Operator is accountable for checking vehicle bodies after the ED process and manually correcting surface imperfections. The purpose of the role is to remove defects, improve smoothness, and prepare the body surface for primer application while meeting quality, safety, and production standards. This position contributes directly to better first-pass yield, stronger appearance quality, and improved customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect ED-coated bodies visually and by touch to spot surface flaws.
- Recognize and mark defects such as ED roughness, dust, run sags, and excess film in line with quality rules.
- Perform manual sanding on ED surfaces using approved abrasives and tools.
- Apply the correct grit progression, pressure, and sanding coverage.
- Protect coating thickness, edges, sharp corners, and welded joints from damage.
- Limit rework to approved boundaries and follow standard operating procedures.
- Deliver a smooth, defect-free finish suitable for primer application.
- Meet internal quality standards and OEM paint requirements.
- Escalate defects that cannot be corrected within rework limits to the Team Leader or Quality team.
- Assist with quality audits and containment actions.
- Prevent over-sanding and avoid unnecessary repeat work.
- Follow all safety practices for sanding activities and paint shop operations.
- Use PPE such as gloves, masks, eye protection, and safety shoes, and apply ergonomic and safe work methods.
- Keep the work area clean and orderly.
- Dispose of sanding waste and consumables according to environmental procedures.
- Handle sanding tools, blocks, and related materials properly and safely.
- Check tools before use, report damaged items, and keep equipment in usable condition.
- Assist with minor maintenance tasks when directed.
- Meet production targets without sacrificing quality.
- Work according to standard instructions and takt time requirements.
- Take part in shift handovers and communication.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and 5S practices in the sanding area.
Requirements
- High school certificate or a technical diploma is preferred; other certification may also be considered.
- 1 to 2 years of experience in an automotive paint shop or surface-preparation role.
- Experience with ED sanding, primer sanding, or body surface preparation is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of safety practices in paint shop environments.
- Willingness to work shifts and follow production schedules.
- Ability to identify surface defects and understand ED coating characteristics.
- Knowledge of sanding materials, grit selection, and sanding methods.
- Strong manual dexterity and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and quality standards consistently.
- Comfort working in a production-line setting.
- Good teamwork and communication abilities.
- Commitment to shop-floor rules and safety requirements.
