Role overview
South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology is undergoing a major service integration to bring existing pathology services together and strengthen support for patients, clinicians, and wider healthcare partners across the Integrated Care System. The aim is to deliver modern, high-quality laboratory medicine that improves patient care, supports the best possible clinical outcomes, and contributes to healthcare transformation across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and beyond.
This permanent full-time Band 2 opportunity sits within Pathology Reception in the Blood Sciences Department. The post involves working in a busy, contemporary reception and laboratory setting, carrying out data entry and the first-stage handling of patient samples while supporting Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists.
Main duties
The role also covers answering telephone enquiries and carrying out a range of clerical tasks. You will be expected to work accurately, communicate clearly, and contribute effectively as part of a team. Strong keyboard skills, along with sound numeracy and literacy, are essential.
You will handle pre-analytical sample processing, including receipt, preparation, and processing of specimens. The role also requires the safe storage, retrieval, and disposal of biological material in line with established procedures.
In addition, you will respond to direct queries from medical staff, nursing teams, and other service users, including telephone enquiries, and take the appropriate follow-up action where needed. The post supports the maintenance of high scientific and technical standards, the promotion of education and training, and compliance with all Trust and departmental policies.
You will also maintain clinical records linked to the work carried out and may be required to enter or review test results produced by others. Depending on service need, you could be asked to help supervise, organise, allocate work, or train less experienced colleagues in your area.
Working arrangements
This post requires working variable shifts on a 24/7 rota, which includes nights, weekends, and bank holidays. Attendance at the Barnsley site is required to deliver the service.
