Role overview
The Flagger supports safe traffic movement around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. This position includes placing and removing traffic control equipment such as signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, paddles, signs, and other devices to guide motorists safely through or around the work area. The job calls for strong attention to detail, the ability to work outdoors in changing weather, and the stamina to remain standing for long periods.
Key duties
- Position traffic control signs, cones, and related devices to redirect vehicles away from work areas.
- Control traffic using stop/slow paddles and other approved signaling methods.
- Stay in contact with coworkers through two-way radios to keep the site coordinated.
- Be prepared to stand, walk, and reach with the arms for as long as 10 hours per day.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment to and from job locations.
- Carry out routine vehicle inspections and basic maintenance checks.
- Work in outdoor environments and around moving equipment, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Operate in work conditions that are typically moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Handle additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license is required.
- Background screening must be cleared, including a motor vehicle records check.
- Successful drug screening and compliance with federal DOT standards are mandatory.
- Proper safety gear must be worn, including work boots with safety toes, a hard hat, safety glasses, and a safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Comfort working in different weather conditions and active traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for working with contractors and internal teams while delivering excellent customer service.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-based setting.
- Good attendance, dependable transportation, and a strong work ethic are expected.
- Completion of the ATSSA Flagger training course and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Willingness to travel statewide, including occasional overnight stays.
- Availability to work nights and weekends as project demands require.
- Must be available for a rotating on-call schedule.
