Job overview
This is an advanced DIY sales role for someone with strong knowledge of automotive parts, store processes, and customer problem-solving. The position focuses on helping do-it-yourself customers with complex vehicle-related issues, locating the right parts quickly, and supporting the store through strong sales and service execution.
The role requires deep familiarity with inventory handling, store maintenance routines, and automotive systems. It may involve sourcing parts through special orders or alternate suppliers when needed. Fleet safety knowledge is considered an advantage.
Primary responsibilities
- Deliver top-tier customer support and resolve DIY customer issues effectively.
- Provide a strong in-store, phone, and online selling experience for DIY shoppers.
- Work toward individual and store-level sales and service targets.
- Handle DIY support services such as testing, battery fitting, and wiper installation.
- Maintain high standards for customer experience and store presentation.
- Serve as a key holder with duties such as assigning tasks, ensuring completion, managing safety, and handling opening and closing procedures.
Secondary responsibilities
- Support inventory activities such as planograms, truck unloading, cycle counts, back stock handling, and related tasks.
- Provide backup support for professional service needs.
- Help keep the store clean and organized, including floors, restrooms, front-facing displays, dusting, and parking lot upkeep.
Skills and success factors
- Strong DIY selling ability, including advanced selling techniques.
- Clear, friendly communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to find, identify, and stock the correct parts.
- Good awareness of safety practices and procedures.
- Comfort with inventory systems and store equipment.
- Broad knowledge of automotive parts and vehicle systems.
- Ability to use POS and parts lookup tools efficiently.

- Ability to source parts from multiple channels as needed.
Essential job skills
- Working knowledge of vehicle systems and diagnostic basics, including engine, suspension, brakes, electronics, and exhaust.
- Ability to speak and write in English and communicate well with customers, coworkers, and managers.
- Skill in reading and understanding safety instructions, operating guides, maintenance manuals, parts catalogs, and procedure documents.
- Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
- Willingness to complete the Parts Knowledge Assessment successfully.
- Basic arithmetic ability across whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Prior experience
- 3 to 5 years of previous experience in automotive parts.
- Demonstrated sales success, including handling customer transactions.
Education
- High school diploma or GED.
Physical requirements
This job is largely active and involves standing or walking for most of the shift. It also requires speaking and hearing clearly, using hands and fingers to handle items, reaching, climbing or balancing, and bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling when needed.
The role includes lifting or moving items up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work environment
Work is mainly indoors, though occasional outdoor tasks may be required, such as battery or wiper installations in changing weather. The role may also involve exposure to moving parts, heights, chemicals, electrical risk, explosives, vibration, and moderate noise.
Compensation and benefits
The expected hourly pay range for a new team member is CAD 17.95 to CAD 21.55. Actual pay depends on factors such as location, retail experience, automotive knowledge, education, leadership background, relevant skills, and shift differential where applicable.
