Role overview
This permanent part-time position sits within Paramedic Services under the Community Well-Being department and is based at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. The role reports to the Commander of Paramedic Services and focuses on supervising a platoon of ambulance personnel, overseeing facilities, equipment and inventory, and helping ensure ambulance service is delivered efficiently and in line with established standards and the City’s System Status Plan.
The position requires shift work. The schedule is 70 hours bi-weekly. There is one vacancy. The salary grade is Group 13, with a pay range of $4,085.90 to $4,809.70 bi-weekly, pending review and final confirmation through the job evaluation process.
The expected start date will be determined after the selection process. A criminal record check is required, but applicants should not include one with their application.
Key accountabilities
- Lead and coordinate employees within the platoon, including training, performance management, promotion-related input, discipline, and recommendations for termination, following policy and practice.
- Represent management at the first stage of the grievance process.
- Track operational counts and staffing levels for vehicles, equipment, uniforms, medical supplies and drugs, and arrange repairs or replenishment as needed.
- Confirm that all operational equipment, including vehicles and medical devices, remains clean, safe and fully functional, with required safeguards in place.
- Work with the Central Ambulance Communication Centre, hospitals and partner agencies so day-to-day operations remain aligned with approved plans.
- Support continuous quality improvement initiatives and help put service improvements into practice.
- Contribute to business and operational service planning and implementation.
- Keep staff informed of matters affecting service delivery, such as road closures, detours and road conditions.
- Carry out routine employee and service audits, including field checks, documentation reviews and compliance monitoring under relevant laws and policies.
- Investigate operational concerns at the initial stage, including vehicle collisions and internal or external complaints, and compile supporting documentation.
- Serve as Incident Command for the division during multi-agency or major incidents, ensuring communication follows the chain of command.
- Maintain the required paramedic certification level and carry out related frontline duties as needed.
- Help deliver public education and public relations initiatives when required.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the City’s Safety Manual and the provincial legislation referenced in it.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and experience
- Completion of a diploma in Emergency Care/Paramedicine from an Ontario community college.
- Current Primary Care Paramedic certification in Ontario.
- Advanced Care Paramedic certification in Ontario is considered an asset.
- Eligibility to work in Ontario under the Ambulance Act.
- At least five years of directly related paramedic experience.
- At least one year of supervisory experience in emergency medical services.
- Strong working knowledge of ambulance operations, practices and procedures.
- Familiarity with applicable legislation and regulations, including the Ambulance Act, the Highway Traffic Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Ability to pursue Advanced Care Paramedicine approval through the Base Hospital.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a courteous, effective approach with the public.
- Ability to lead, motivate and train staff.
- Comfort using Windows-based administrative systems and software such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file maintenance and information retrieval tools.
- Sound judgment in emergency situations and a strong understanding of customer needs.
- Mental and physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the role.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills; French verbal skills are highly desirable.
- A current Criminal Records Check, provided at the candidate’s own expense.
- If a City or personal vehicle is used for City business, the candidate must be physically able to drive safely, hold a valid Class F licence, have an acceptable driving record and maintain personal insurance coverage.
Working conditions and additional information
This is a non-union position. Shift work is required. The initial reporting location is the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre. The role may involve using a personal or City vehicle for work-related travel. The preliminary salary band and group level are subject to review and will be confirmed after the formal job evaluation process, in line with the City’s salary administration procedures.
