Role summary
As a Language Bank Interpreter, you will help bridge communication between people with limited English proficiency and service providers in court, healthcare, and social service environments. The role calls for accurate, neutral interpreting and a strong commitment to professionalism.
Compensation
The approved pay for this position is $26.05 to $27.83 per hour. This range is shared only for roles in Massachusetts and Vermont because of local pay transparency requirements. Final compensation is determined by factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, location, and other job-related considerations.
Key duties
- Convey each speaker’s message accurately while preserving both meaning and tone, using the language that the service recipient understands best.
- Remain dependable, punctual, and consistent in carrying out assignments.
- Protect all assignment-related details and keep them strictly private.
- Be prepared to use consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation as needed by the situation.
- Accept jobs thoughtfully, taking into account skill level, setting, and the people involved.
- Present yourself professionally and act appropriately in every interpreted setting.
- Follow recognized interpreter ethics standards for medical and legal environments, such as those established by IMIA, NAJIT, or NCIHC.
- Take on additional related tasks that support the goals of the organization and department.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED is required; two years of college is preferred.
- Advanced fluency in English and the target language is required.
- You must be able to interpret accurately and impartially in both directions: English to the target language and the target language to English.
- A certificate showing completion of a nationally recognized interpreter training program is required.
- Two years of relevant experience is preferred.
- You must pass an acceptable criminal background check.
- Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule is required.
Physical requirements
This is generally a sedentary role, meaning the work is mostly seated, though brief periods of standing or walking may be needed. The position may also involve repeating the same motions.
- You must be able to drive your own vehicle to different locations.
- You should be able to speak clearly enough for others to understand you.
- You need the ability to focus on one sound source while filtering out background noise.
- You must be able to hear differences between sounds.
