About the role
The Hermitage Hotel is seeking a Glacier Explorers Guide to join its unique experience operation at Tasman Lake. This is a fixed-term position with start dates ranging from late August to mid-November 2024, and the assignment continues through the end of the season in June 2025. The role sits within a remote alpine setting where team members live and work together, with a strong community feel and exceptional scenery right outside the door.
Glacier Explorers is part of The Hermitage Hotel and offers guests an unforgettable outing on the Tasman Lake. As a guide, you will operate and steer small passenger boats, take visitors among icebergs, and bring them close to the terminal face of New Zealand’s largest glacier. Each day on the lake is different, creating a role that combines variety, challenge, and hands-on guest engagement.
What you will do
- Drive and handle small passenger boats safely on the Tasman Lake.
- Lead guests on an informative and enjoyable glacier excursion.
- Share local knowledge, energy, and enthusiasm throughout the experience.
- Manage groups confidently and communicate clearly with a wide range of visitors.
- Adapt across different tours and products as required.
What we are looking for
Previous guiding experience is helpful but not essential, as full training is provided. The employer will ensure you are brought up to speed on the products, service standards, expectations, and operating procedures.
Applicants must be willing to commit through to the end of the season in June 2025 and should have a strong interest in the outdoors, a responsible work ethic, and a flexible, can-do attitude. A New Zealand driver licence or legal entitlement to drive in New Zealand is required. Because of the remote location, having your own transport is recommended.
Further information
This opportunity is open to people who are legally entitled to work in New Zealand. The organisation notes that team members should be comfortable with living and working in a small, remote community and should bring positivity and enthusiasm for the lifestyle that comes with it.
Why join
The role offers competitive pay, guaranteed hours, thorough ongoing training, and the chance to enjoy free access to Hermitage activities from day one. Team members also receive generous food and beverage discounts, discounted accommodation for friends and family, and a remarkable commute with stunning alpine views.
Additional desirable experience
- Guiding experience in a similar setting.
- Boating or water sports background.
- First aid experience.
- Class 2 licence and P endorsement.
