The role

Stats NZ is seeking an Enterprise Portfolio Analyst to help shape how enterprise-wide initiatives are planned, prioritised, and governed. Working within the Enterprise Portfolio Office (EPO), this position converts complex portfolio information into clear insights, supports governance activity, and helps foster strong working relationships across project and leadership groups.

The role combines portfolio analysis, stakeholder collaboration, and governance support. You will examine a portfolio of complex initiatives, build a strong understanding of delivery performance and strategic alignment, and spot risks and opportunities as they arise. Your analysis will feed prioritisation and investment decisions through concise, decision-ready insights.

A major part of the job is creating and maintaining governance dashboards and reports using Excel and Power BI. You will gather information from several sources, shape it into trusted reporting for senior leaders, and keep improving the quality, accuracy, and presentation of reporting outputs.

You will partner with Portfolio Managers and delivery teams to collect updates, validate information, and understand delivery context. By communicating openly and honestly, you will become a dependable contact for portfolio analysis and reporting, while helping teams work through governance expectations, initiative performance, risks, and dependencies.

Within the governance area, you will contribute to assurance work across the portfolio, including initiatives undergoing health checks, Independent Quality Assurance (IQA), and Gateway reviews. Findings from these activities will need to be reflected in portfolio reporting and used to support leadership conversations.

You will also monitor portfolio risks and opportunities at an enterprise level, helping to shape mitigation actions and response approaches. In addition, you will support resource planning and prioritisation so that competing demands can be balanced against strategic goals.

Continuous improvement is another important part of the role. You will look for ways to improve portfolio processes, strengthen data quality, and enhance governance practices. As priorities shift, you should be comfortable working in a changing environment and supporting change activity and new ways of working.

Success in this role depends on strong analytical thinking, technical ability with Excel and Power BI, and solid stakeholder engagement skills, along with the confidence to work through complexity and improve enterprise portfolio practices.

What you bring

  • Experience in an Enterprise Portfolio Office (EPO) or a comparable portfolio / PMO setting
  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or an equivalent level of relevant experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in data analytics and in developing and presenting organisational insights
  • Background supporting complex, enterprise-scale programmes or portfolios
  • Strong capability in portfolio reporting and data analysis, including advanced Excel and Power BI use
  • Experience contributing to governance and assurance activity such as health checks, IQA, and Gateway reviews
  • Proven ability to build trusted stakeholder relationships and adapt well in changing environments
  • Valued understanding of mātauranga Māori, tikanga, and the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the workplace
  • Te reo Māori proficiency, or a strong willingness to develop capability in te reo Māori, is welcomed
  • A clear commitment to continuous learning and to applying cultural capability in day-to-day practice
