Job overview

The custodian will be responsible for keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and well maintained. This role also involves safe handling of hazardous waste-related tasks, routine use of cleaning equipment, and following site procedures and safety standards.

Core responsibilities

• Carry out general janitorial work across assigned areas.
• Complete all tasks listed on the daily work schedule.
• Handle hazardous-waste duties such as collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, shipping, receiving, labeling, cleaning, recycling, and packaging special or hazardous waste.
• Use motorized cleaning equipment as required.
• Keep the assigned area clean and maintained throughout the day.
• Escalate incidents and unsafe or hazardous conditions to the supervisor.
• Follow all safety rules, policies, and operating procedures.
• Intervene when unsafe behavior is observed, both from others and self.
• Work collaboratively with other team members.
• Carry out repetitive duties as part of the role.
• Maintain a tidy and orderly work area.
• Follow company protocols, procedures, policies, and rules at all times.
• Accept direction and supervision and respond appropriately.
• Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
• Cover duties when the team is short-staffed.
• Help the shift lead finish punch-list items.
• Use the required personal protective equipment correctly.
• Maintain a professional appearance and manner of working.
• Understand the importance of customer service and customer satisfaction.
• Be familiar with reporting systems and environmental responsibilities.

Qualifications and experience

No formal education is required. Prior training or work experience of 3 to 6 months is preferred, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

This role may require a valid driver’s license. Completion of safety and task-training certification is expected, and forklift certification may also be required.

Skills and abilities

• Ability to follow written instructions, procedures, manuals, and related documents.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
• Awareness of how to maintain and care for cleaning equipment.
• Understanding of cleaning chemicals and compounds, including safe and efficient use.
• Bilingual ability is considered an advantage.

Physical requirements

The job may involve sitting and communicating for extended periods, and the employee must be able to lift or move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to support individuals with disabilities in performing the essential functions of the role.

Work schedule and pay

Several shift patterns are available, including Thursday to Monday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 5:00 pm to 1:30 am, and Monday to Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. The hourly pay range is $19.00 to $20.00.
