About the Role

Britannia is growing and is seeking a skilled mariner to support the Loss Prevention team in Singapore. Reporting to the Associate Director, Loss Prevention – Asia, this role contributes to the development and delivery of the APAC loss prevention plan, while also helping advance the department’s broader global objectives. The position supports members and works closely with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders. Candidates should bring experience from offshore operations or green-ship fleets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and refine articles and advisory material for publication, helping raise awareness of safety issues and maritime risk trends.
  • Investigate individual and grouped claims to uncover recurring causes, emerging patterns, and risk areas.
  • Examine claim records, incident reports, and supporting data as part of causal analysis.
  • Visit members’ offices, manning locations, and vessels to collect evidence relevant to investigations.
  • Engage with industry bodies to gather information on the identified risk topics.
  • Prepare formal reports with findings, conclusions, and practical recommendations.
  • Capture lessons learned and share them with members and other stakeholders.
  • Keep the Technical Enquiries Database updated so accurate data can be retrieved for departmental and stakeholder use.
  • Contribute to the design and rollout of proactive loss prevention initiatives for members.
  • Respond promptly with clear written and verbal maritime guidance to Britannia members and Tindall Riley colleagues, including claims handlers and underwriters.
  • Help prepare and deliver technical seminars and webinars for members, seafarers, shore-based managers, and superintendents.
  • Carry out office-based management reviews of members or their appointed managers to assess organisational factors affecting safe ship operations.
  • Make routine member visits, representing the Association professionally while discussing and promoting loss prevention work.

Candidate Profile

The ideal applicant has substantial seagoing or ship-management experience, preferably involving offshore vessels, green-ship fleets, tugs, smaller-tonnage operations, and bulk cargo exposure. Prior shore-based work in a marine-related office role is also important. The role calls for hands-on experience with marine incident or claims investigation, plus familiarity with how P&I clubs operate and how marine insurance claims are handled.

Strong writing ability is essential, including the skill to produce structured, accurate, and audience-appropriate guidance and articles. The role also requires confident speaking and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely. Candidates must be comfortable using MS Office applications and should be proficient in Excel, including functions such as VLOOKUP and pivot tables.

Qualifications

  • Recognised professional marine qualifications are required.

Core Competencies

  • Works well in teams and knows when to collaborate or seek guidance.
  • Maintains a professional manner when dealing with claims handlers, underwriters, and members.
  • Communicates clearly in writing and verbally, including presentations.
  • Makes timely, practical decisions suitable for managerial-level work.
  • Balances member needs and consistently follows through on commitments.
  • Handles detailed work accurately and meets deadlines or milestone targets.
  • Uses logical analysis to assess problems and reach sound conclusions.
  • Identifies issues and develops effective solutions in a structured way.
