Job Summary
Hennessey Engineers is hiring a Surveyor in Training or a licensed Professional Surveyor with experience in Civil 3D and MicroStation OpenRoads Designer for its Southgate, MI office. The role combines field and office work and may include construction staking, engineering design surveys, data gathering, GPS work, GIS mapping, mobile or terrestrial LiDAR collection, site investigations, field reviews, and coordination across multiple projects and clients. A strong command of current surveying practices and equipment is essential. Depending on suitability, this role may support a hybrid or remote working arrangement.
Key Duties
- Set up, adjust, and use surveying instruments in the field.
- Interpret engineering plans to prepare staking information for construction work.
- Use electronic and computerized tools for data collection.
- Document measurements, observations, sketches, and field notes accurately.
- Transform survey data into boundary, topographic, right-of-way, and as-built deliverables using MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position requires regular outdoor movement, including walking, climbing, and navigating varied terrain during field surveys. The job also involves lifting and carrying survey equipment, driving a company vehicle to project locations, and working in adverse weather conditions. In the office, duties include computer use, standard office equipment operation, sitting, standing, and light lifting. Clear communication skills are needed for in-person, written, and phone interactions. Good visual ability is also important for successful performance.
Education and Licensure
- A bachelor’s degree in Surveying or Engineering is preferred, though comparable experience may also be considered.
- A Professional Surveyor license, or the ability to earn one, is an added advantage.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Experience and Skill Expectations
- At least 3 years of relevant surveying experience.
- Hands-on experience with MicroStation Select Series and OpenRoads Designer.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Background on Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects is preferred.
- Ability to follow safety requirements on construction and project sites.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
