About Xata

Xata is creating Postgres infrastructure designed for agentic workloads. As AI agents begin acting like software’s newest users, they need secure, isolated places to test, experiment, and run. Xata helps teams spin up Postgres branches instantly so every agent gets its own production-like environment, without adding operational burden or inflating infrastructure spend. This lets companies use Xata for agent-driven workflows while leaving their main databases exactly where they are.

Role Overview

You will be part of the Backend team, helping build the essential services and infrastructure behind the Xata platform. The team is split into two flexible areas:

Data Plane: the runtime layer that makes Postgres branching possible, including storage, replication and data movement, provisioning, orchestration, performance, and reliability.
Control Plane: the services and public APIs that manage and expose that infrastructure, including customer-facing product flows, coordination, and close work with the frontend team.

Depending on team priorities and your strengths, you may work mainly in one of these areas.

Key Responsibilities

Architect and develop core platform features for Xata’s Postgres infrastructure.
Build backend services and APIs for both hosted and self-managed products.
Work on database branching, storage subsystems, replication, lifecycle management, and orchestration.
Take ownership of work from discovery through proposal, implementation, deployment, and operations.
Contribute to open-source projects such as pgroll, pgstream, and other Xata components.
Partner with backend, frontend, product, and platform engineers on delivery and execution.
Join architecture reviews and help shape technical direction.
Participate in on-call duties and support platform reliability.

What We're Looking For

We need someone who works well with a high level of ownership and can move ideas into production with little hand-holding. The right person has substantial experience building backend, infrastructure, or distributed systems software in production settings. Strong coding ability in Go, C/C++, Java, or similar languages is important, along with a solid grasp of distributed systems concepts such as reliability, consistency, concurrency, and failure handling. Experience with cloud tooling like Kubernetes and Docker is expected, as is familiarity with PostgreSQL and database systems. Because this is a remote role, strong written communication and effective remote collaboration are essential.

Hands-on work with database technologies or PostgreSQL internals.
