Role overview
McCain Foods is looking for a full-time Packing Operator to join its Timaru plant in Canterbury, New Zealand. This position sits within a 24/7 production environment where you will own a designated production zone and help turn locally sourced potatoes into chips and fries that meet the company’s quality standards.
The role calls for someone who is comfortable working independently, staying alert in a fast-moving plant, and taking responsibility for output, hygiene, and equipment performance. Full training will be provided, so prior experience is helpful but not essential.
What you will do
- Take complete ownership of your assigned production area and ensure it runs efficiently to required standards.
- Set up and run computer-controlled machinery using touchscreen systems.
- Follow a rotating 12-hour shift pattern consisting of 2 day shifts from 7am to 7pm, 2 night shifts from 7pm to 7am, then 4 days off.
- Spend long periods on your feet and walking while keeping attention on the production line throughout the shift.
- Complete routine data entry and paperwork needed for quality control and operational records.
- Carry out regular cleaning and sanitation tasks to maintain food safety and plant hygiene.
- Spot issues with product or equipment and respond quickly to keep production moving.
- Work closely with a small team while handling most of your zone independently and passing on clear shift handovers.
What you need
- Strong learning ability, with the flexibility to solve problems and adjust to changing production demands.
- Basic computer literacy, including comfort with touchscreen controls and simple data entry.
- Confidence to work on your own while still communicating effectively with teammates.
- Physical ability to manage long shifts that involve standing and walking for extended periods.
- A positive, willing-to-learn attitude; the employer will provide full onboarding and training.
- Commitment to safety, cleanliness, and food quality requirements.
- Previous exposure to food manufacturing, shift work, or a similar environment is an advantage but not a must.
- Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand, with a current work visa required and no sponsorship available.
- Willingness to complete a medical assessment, drug test, and reference checks.
