Meter Reader

Role Summary

Genea is hiring a part-time Meter Reader to record commercial electrical, water, and gas meter readings for billing. The position is field-based across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York, and uses a smartphone for data capture. The schedule is approximately 30 to 40 hours during one week each month. Pay starts at $25.00 per hour.

Key Duties

• Visit commercial sites and take accurate readings from electrical, water, and gas meters.
• Complete re-reads whenever required.
• Capture clear photographs of each meter.
• Report any changes, issues, or irregularities to management.
• Follow safety rules at all times, including PPE requirements and reporting safety concerns.
• Carry out additional duties assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required; a technical background is preferred.
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
• Candidate must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must use a personal vehicle for travel between locations.
• Must provide and use a personal cell phone for work-related tasks.
• Basic comfort using smartphone apps and internet-based tools.
• Ability to read all common meter types.
• Clear, professional communication skills.
• Strong customer-service mindset and a cooperative, team-oriented approach.
• Good composure under pressure and ability to manage multiple tasks.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Frequent standing, walking, and sitting are required.
• Regular use of hands and fingers for dexterity is needed.
• The role often involves climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
• There may be occasional talking or hearing demands.
• Work can involve exposure to wet or humid conditions.
• Frequent work near moving mechanical parts is expected.
• Occasional work in high or precarious places may be necessary.
• Outdoor work in varying weather conditions is common.

Compensation and Reimbursements

The estimated pay is $25 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement at the standard IRS rate of 72.5 cents per mile effective January 1, 2026, and partial reimbursement for cell phone expenses under Genea’s policy.
