Role Overview

The EHS Manager will be responsible for building, managing, and improving programs that lower risk and reduce losses tied to employee safety, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental performance, and occupational health. The position also carries local accountability for site security and is part of the site senior leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee environmental management, tracking, and reporting for the plant.
  • Design and deliver safety and environmental training, and ensure the resources are available to complete it.
  • Work with corporate, divisional, internal plant teams, and community or government groups on safety, environmental, and health matters.
  • Prepare and submit required reports when needed or requested.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective measures.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for safety, environmental, and health topics across projects, equipment installations, and product or supply changes, including RCE reviews.
  • Assess EHS risks, measure their business impact, and recommend practical actions.
  • Monitor shifts in regulations, market conditions, and legislation, and evaluate how they may affect the plant.
  • Lead, develop, and motivate the team effectively.
  • Promote a collaborative work environment aligned with Abbott’s values.
  • Handle conflict and emerging issues carefully, in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate employee training and development using Abbott’s available resources.
  • Review and manage requests such as leave approvals and expense processing while ensuring policy compliance.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, safety, health, environmental science, technical studies, or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience.
  • At least 10 years of experience in EHS or occupational health in a manufacturing setting, including a minimum of 5 years in leadership roles.
  • Experience in dairy, food, pharma, chemical, or other high-risk manufacturing environments in New Zealand is preferred.
  • NEBOSH qualification or an equivalent credential is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand health and safety laws and compliance requirements.
  • Good judgment, problem-solving ability, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with solid interpersonal and consulting ability.
  • Sound business awareness and the ability to build trusted relationships.
  • Well-organized and comfortable using technology.
  • Proactive, structured, and focused on practical solutions.
