Role summary
The Diagnostic Data Entry Specialist supports pathologists by accurately entering diagnostic codes and additional test orders into the laboratory information system. This position requires a strong focus on compliance, precision, confidentiality, and professionalism while helping ensure cases move efficiently through the workflow.
Key responsibilities
In this position, you will receive alpha or alphanumeric diagnostic codes and/or extra test instructions from pathologists, either spoken directly or written on pathology requisitions. You will then enter the appropriate information into the LIS so the rest of the team can access and process it.
You will also enter diagnostic codes to generate macros, which are paragraphs of diagnostic information, and close cases so they are added to the pathologist review queue for sign-out when appropriate. In addition, you may be asked to take on other related duties and follow supervisor instructions as needed.
Schedule and workplace
This is a full-time role with 30+ hours per week. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 6:30pm, with flexibility to help cover team needs when required. The job is performed in a professional laboratory setting and may involve exposure to chemical, hazardous, and biological samples. Standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, copiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines is used regularly.
Training and compliance
All role-specific SOPs and laboratory compliance workflows must be completed after hire and before any laboratory work begins. A competency review will take place after one month, and independent work is only allowed once that assessment is completed. Ongoing new-hire and annual training is also required, including updates to SOPs and software systems as applicable.
Education and experience
A high school diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement, while an associate degree is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable using computers and should have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and detail-oriented skills are needed. Prior medical data entry experience is preferred.
Physical demands and travel
The role involves frequent communication, standing, walking, handling objects, and reaching with the arms, along with extended periods of sitting and computer use. Lifting up to 25 pounds without assistance may be required. Travel may be needed for up to 25% or less of work time from the home office.
Compensation and benefits
The hourly pay range for this position is $19 to $24.03.
Full-time employees working 30+ hours per week are eligible for medical coverage, including virtual care, HSA/FSA options, dental, and vision benefits starting on the first of the month after the hire date. They also become eligible for a 401(k) after 30 days of employment, company-sponsored short-term disability for non-California employees, pre-tax transit commuter savings, and an extra paid personal holiday for their birthday.
Part-time employees working fewer than 30 hours per week are eligible for dental and vision coverage starting on the first of the month after the hire date, plus 401(k) eligibility after 30 days. All employees may also receive discounts on Schweiger skin care products and cosmetic services.
