Role overview
Ivy Tech Evansville is hiring an Academic Advisor to guide both new and continuing students through a developmental advising model built around case management. The position helps students clarify academic and career objectives, understand placement results, review program requirements and prerequisite pathways, and build the foundational knowledge needed to register for classes. The advisor also connects students with internal and external support services that can strengthen persistence and success.
Key responsibilities
- Show a strong dedication to student growth and achievement through advocacy, a positive mindset, flexibility, accessibility, solution-oriented support, and encouragement.
- Use developmental advising methods informed by student development, human development, and learning theory to help students shape personal and academic/career goals.
- Help students make sense of placement scores, curriculum structures, and course prerequisites.
- Support students in understanding the college registration process and the steps that must be completed before each semester begins.
- Stay up to date on academic offerings, curriculum changes, institutional practices, and student/academic policies.
- Work with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs teams to keep advising materials accurate for students, faculty, and staff.
- Handle an advising caseload in a way that supports retention, persistence, and overall student success through timely outreach and intervention.
- Assist students in creating an individualized academic plan.
- Track student progress through regular meetings, communication, intervention, assessment, and data gathering.
- Keep advising records compliant with college requirements and FERPA.
- Build effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Use a communication strategy to involve the college community in the advising process.
- Promote an inclusive environment where all individuals are respected, supported, and valued.
- Take part in professional development, professional associations, and college committees.
- Maintain a working understanding of student financial aid programs.
Schedule and compensation
This is a full-time onsite position in Evansville, Indiana. Typical working hours follow standard business hours, though they may shift during peak periods. The budgeted salary range is $40,000 to $45,000 per year.
Minimum qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field is required. The role also requires three years of experience in academic advising, admissions, career counseling, or a related higher education area; one year of experience is mentioned as an alternate qualification in the source.
Preferred background
A master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education, counseling psychology, or a related discipline is preferred. Experience in a community college setting or a relevant credential is also preferred.
