Role Summary
The Utility Custodian is responsible for keeping campus buildings and facilities clean and well maintained. This is an essential personnel role, and the schedule may occasionally include overtime and weekend work.
Key Duties
- Clean classrooms, dormitories, restrooms, drinking fountains, and other assigned areas.
- Dust and sanitize chalkboards, offices, and other flat surfaces; wash windows, walls, glass doors, and classroom equipment; use ladders when needed; polish brass fixtures.
- Collect waste and empty trash containers.
- Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; shampoo upholstered furniture.
- Identify and report damaged structures or equipment; keep building entrances in good condition.
- Move office furniture and equipment and help prepare and restore rooms for special events.
- Carry out floor technician duties as assigned.
- Support the event setup crew for university-approved functions.
- Complete related tasks and any additional duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be reliable, punctual, and consistent in attendance.
- Prior exposure to commercial floor care equipment is preferred.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be able to work extended hours on manual tasks and lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
- A valid current driver's license is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The role calls for practical knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, supplies, and tools, along with familiarity with equipment such as rotary buffers and carpet extractors. Safe work practices are also important.
Applicants should be able to follow both verbal and written directions, work carefully around chemical, mechanical, and electrical hazards, and handle tasks that involve standing, bending, stooping, walking, or crouching for intervals. The position may require lifting light items often and heavier items occasionally. Work may take place in offices, storage areas, various campus buildings, and outdoors, including cold or poor weather conditions. The employee may also operate golf carts or a company vehicle. Exposure may include noise, dirt, dust, grease, moving machinery, contagious or infectious disease, and irritating chemicals.
Employment Conditions
Employment is contingent on a successful background review, including a criminal history check. Georgia Southwestern State University may also verify credentials and employment history, and where applicable, require a satisfactory credit check and drug screening. Final hiring eligibility is determined at the university’s sole discretion.
