The Protein Homeostasis Thematic Research Center supports oncology and hematology discovery, with a strong emphasis on protein degradation strategies to uncover tumor-specific weaknesses and overcome resistance to existing therapies. This group works on targets once considered difficult to address and operates in a highly collaborative, high-impact research setting.

The Scientist in Discovery Biology will support target validation and drug-development efforts in an oncology research environment. The role centers on designing and running cell-based and mechanistic studies across cell biology, cellular biochemistry, and molecular biology, with particular attention to ubiquitin biology and cell signaling. The scientist will work closely with teams in bioinformatics, chemistry, and HTS.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and refine cell-based assays that help validate targets and advance drug-development programs.
• Plan and execute core mechanistic studies in cell biology, cellular biochemistry, and molecular biology.
• Use knowledge of ubiquitin biology and signaling pathways to help create new drug-discovery methods and technologies.
• Work in coordination with bioinformatics, chemistry, and high-throughput screening teams.
• Keep clear written documentation and communicate findings in a timely, organized way.
• May serve as a representative for the department on a project team or sub-team.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of academic and/or industry experience, or a Master’s degree with at least 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced life-sciences degree with no prior experience required.
• Practical experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular/cellular techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 knockout, lentiviral transduction, western blotting, JESS automated western blotting, pull-down assays, immunoprecipitation, proximity ligation assay, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy.
• Ability to perform functional experiments such as proliferation, apoptosis, cell-cycle, and protein-protein interaction assays.
• Prior exposure to drug-discovery work in solid tumors, whether in academia or industry, is preferred.
• Experience with protein degrader development and/or solid-tumor models is a plus.
• Proficiency with scientific analysis tools including GraphPad Prism, FlowJo, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong organizational skills, the ability to deliver high-quality data on time, and comfort working in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal ability.

Compensation and Benefits

The listed starting salary range for San Diego, CA is $118,750 to $143,901 per year for a full-time employee. Additional cash incentive and stock opportunities may be available based on eligibility. Final pay will depend on experience, job-related knowledge, work schedule, required skills, and where the work is performed.

Work-Life and Time Off

Summer hours eligibility is based on job nature and location. The program is generally intended for U.S. office-based employees and may also apply to some remote-by-design or lab-based roles. It is not available to contractors, leased workers, or other service providers.

Work Location and Occupancy Model

BMS uses an occupancy structure that assigns roles as site-essential, site-by-design, field-based, or remote-by-design. The assigned structure depends on the duties of the role.

Site-essential roles require employees to work onsite for 100% of shifts. Site-by-design roles may support a hybrid arrangement with at least 50% onsite at the assigned facility. For field-based and remote-by-design roles, travel to customers, patients, business partners, or meetings may still be required as part of the job.
