Role overview
The Video Operator supports the engineering side of remote broadcast productions. In this role, you will paint and shade cameras, keep remote event technical operations running smoothly, and help with the planning, design, and rollout of a range of live events.
Key responsibilities
- Set and balance video levels, including black/white balance and color matching across cameras.
- Route and patch video signals, and work with the video crew to position monitors for talent and production needs.
- Diagnose and resolve video-related issues, such as camera, cabling, and lens concerns.
- Maintain and organize remote compound video assets, fiber cabling, and source listings.
- Work with Operations and Production partners to build, plan, and improve workflows.
- Contribute to system design, on-site integration, and setup for video paths, fiber-linked systems, digital compression and transmission standards, PC networking, master control and hub facilities, and network storage.
- Support broadcast trucks, fly packs, and fiber kits as part of remote event execution.
Required experience and qualifications
- At least 2 years of hands-on remote production operations experience at network level in a video-focused role.
- Strong understanding of live production equipment and how it operates.
- Ability to read and use a waveform and vectorscope across SDI and IP workflows, including HD, UHD, and HDR formats.
- Capability to manage overall camera look and shading requirements.
- Comfortable monitoring and adjusting signals and displays as needed.
- Ability to set up, run, and tear down video equipment on location.
- Strong troubleshooting ability, technical judgment, and communication skills to clearly explain issues and fixes.
- Availability for travel, weekend work, and holiday schedules based on production needs.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred qualifications
- Broad knowledge of broadcast equipment and remote production requirements.
- Experience with fiber optic systems and cabling.
Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred.
Compensation and benefits
This remote position pays between $70 and $90 per hour. The final rate may vary based on location, relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. Benefits may include medical, financial, and other offerings depending on the level and role.
