Role overview
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Temuka within the construction/architecture and interior design space. The work centres on building and caring for river protection and drainage infrastructure, supporting a team focused on environmental sustainability.
About Environment Canterbury
Environment Canterbury is a regional council responsible for managing key natural resources such as air, soil, water, and land. The organisation works alongside mana whenua Ngāi Tahu to protect environmental health and help create a sustainable future for the region. It operates in a changing environmental and policy landscape and must stay flexible as regulations and conditions evolve.
The council’s work is delivered through three main service areas:
- Environmental regulation and protection
- Preparedness for hazards and emergency response
- Public transport
As part of its operating environment, the council also responds to national legislation and policy changes while continuing to deliver for partners, communities, and the environment.
About the role
The position involves hands-on work across local rivers and nearby areas. Duties include establishing and maintaining river protection work, tree planting, structural work, noxious weed control, tree felling, and clearing vegetation. You will use 4WD vehicles, tractors, chainsaws, spray equipment, and other light machinery. Experience with this equipment is preferred, although training is provided.
You will also work alongside teammates, contractors, and larger machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, and skidders.
Working hours and conditions
This is a full-time permanent role with a typical schedule of Monday to Friday, 10 hours per day, for a total of 50 hours per week. You must also be available for work during emergency events such as floods, fires, and other natural disasters. The hourly pay rate is $28.95.
A medical assessment is required before an offer is made because of the physically demanding nature of the job.
What we are looking for
You should be practical, safety-minded, comfortable working outdoors, and eager to learn. A positive attitude and a strong environmental focus are important. You also need sound knowledge of health and safety practices and the ability to work independently without close supervision.
Experience and licence requirements
A full Class 1 driver licence is required at minimum. For operator duties, Class 2 and Class 4 licences with W, T, and R endorsements are needed. Experience using chainsaws, machinery, and herbicide application is useful, though training will be provided. You should also be able to work well in a team and follow health and safety requirements.
Values and culture
The organisation’s values are grounded in kaitiakitanga, pononga, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and māiatanga. It welcomes a diverse workforce and values different perspectives, skills, and contributions.
The council is also working toward excellence as a treaty partner and encourages the use of kaupapa Māori, mātauranga Māori, and te reo Māori in everyday work. Support is available for building capability in this area.

Applications must be submitted through the online form with a CV and cover letter. The closing date is Sunday 12 July, and applications will be reviewed as they arrive, so early applications are encouraged. Interviews may start before the closing date, and the advertisement may be closed early at the organisation’s discretion.
Shortlisted applicants will need to complete an interview process, reference checks, and a criminal check. Additional background checks may also apply where relevant to the role.
The organisation is committed to a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace and encourages applications from people who may not meet every requirement but are excited about the opportunity.
Together we can.
