Role Overview
Tamara is hiring an Engineering Manager II to own a critical part of its engineering function. The role is responsible for both technical direction and delivery across several closely connected and complex product areas. You will lead a team of 6 to 10 senior engineers, possibly organized into two squads, and ensure team goals are closely tied to wider company priorities.
Using your software engineering depth and leadership experience, you will shape the architecture of your team’s systems so they remain dependable, scalable, and high-performing. You will also work as a close partner to product and business leaders, helping shape medium- and long-term direction while keeping the team focused on meaningful outcomes.
The position calls for someone who can drive technical excellence, support the growth of senior engineers and future leaders, handle complicated dependencies across teams, and help improve the way millions of users shop, pay, and bank. The ideal candidate is ambitious, resilient, curious, collaborative, and comfortable adapting quickly while maintaining momentum.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direction and inspiration to a team of senior engineers, ensuring their work is aligned with the company’s broader vision and technology priorities.
- Balance immediate delivery needs with long-term engineering quality, while keeping product and technical goals in sync.
- Coach direct reports and skip-level team members toward future leadership roles, and create opportunities for senior engineers who want to grow.
- Support emerging Engineering Manager I candidates, contribute to team structure planning, hiring plans, succession planning, and performance management across levels.
- Lead architecture discussions and guide improvements in reliability, scalability, performance, and overall technical health.
- Maintain a healthy mix of feature delivery and technical investment across the systems owned by the team.
- Own delivery planning for work that spans multiple teams, including resourcing, hiring strategy, and dependency management.
- Identify and resolve cross-team execution issues early, making clear trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term value.
- Keep leadership informed with clear updates on progress, risks, and mitigation plans.
- Work with product and business stakeholders to shape medium- and long-term strategy and ensure teams are driving measurable outcomes and return on investment.
- Encourage experimentation that supports strategic goals and build a team culture centered on trust, ownership, inclusion, and accountability.
- Collaborate with peer Engineering Managers and the architecture board to maintain alignment and raise standards across engineering.
Candidate Profile
- At least 4 years of experience managing one or more engineering teams, including senior individual contributors and medium-to-high complexity projects.
- Hands-on ownership of delivery for initiatives that involve multiple teams or complex product areas.
- Strong grounding in modern software development, including technologies such as Java or Go, Kubernetes, CI/CD, messaging queues, and cloud services.
- Experience leading architectural conversations and setting technical strategy.
- Proven ability to work with product managers to influence roadmaps and connect technical decisions to business goals.
- Track record of developing engineering talent, especially senior engineers and future managers.
- Solid understanding of Agile practices and experience removing blockers in fast-moving, cross-functional environments.
- Fintech or eCommerce background is an added advantage.
