Role overview

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger in Medford, Oregon. This full-time, on-site role focuses on protecting crews working around live tracks by managing train movement and applying federal railroad safety standards. The position supports work for major railroads, short lines, transit agencies, state transportation rail groups, and outside contractors.

The role reports to the District Manager and requires regular travel, typically ranging from 50% to 85% of the time.

Compensation is stated as $25 to $37, depending on experience.

Experience and background

A minimum of 2 years of relevant railroad experience is required, ideally gained with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, state DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Prior work in Maintenance of Way is preferred.

Key duties

The Railroad Flagger will help coordinate field activity, communicate with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors, and open each shift with a safety briefing. The role also involves enforcing railroad, state, and federal rules, checking that contractors have the necessary training, identifying rule breaches, maintaining on-track safety, and preparing daily activity reports.

Skills and job requirements

Candidates should be comfortable working with basic digital tools such as Citrix, email, phone, and text messaging apps, and should also be confident using Android tablets and smartphones. Strong organization, close attention to detail, solid verbal and written communication, and the ability to build dependable client relationships are important. Familiarity with railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices is also expected.

Applicants must be ready for long-duration travel assignments, including trips that may last for months, and must complete all required federal, client, and company training.

Work environment

This is a field-based position. The candidate must communicate effectively in English, including speaking, reading, and writing. The work may involve long periods of standing, walking on uneven surfaces, and driving or traveling long distances. Employees must be able to work in extreme heat and cold, as well as dusty and noisy conditions. Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision is necessary, and the job requires lifting up to 50 pounds.
