Role Overview
This position focuses on accurate tariff classification and customs compliance for import and export freight. The role supports efficient customs clearance and contributes to a strong customer experience by making sure goods are identified and classified correctly.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign goods to the correct tariff category using customs rules and internationally recognized HS codes.
- Check shipping documents such as invoices and packing lists to confirm the right classification has been applied.
- Work with customers, freight forwarders, and internal colleagues to gather product details and resolve classification questions.
- Keep up to date with customs legislation, trade agreements, and tariff schedules so advice remains accurate and compliant.
- Spot and fix gaps or inconsistencies in classification and documentation, while keeping stakeholders informed early.
- Liaise with the Australian Border Force and other government authorities to support regulatory compliance.
- Maintain detailed records and supporting documentation for tariff decisions and clearance activity.
- Follow industry and regulatory changes closely and look for ways to improve processes.
Education and Experience
A secondary school education or equivalent is required. Qualifications or certifications related to specialized equipment or subject matter knowledge are strongly preferred.
Experience expectations vary by level: Level I requires 2 years in customs clearance, Level II requires 3 years, and Lead requires 4 years.
