Biomedical Scientist

Role overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is looking for an experienced and motivated Biomedical Scientist to support a busy histopathology service. The role is centered in the routine histology laboratory, including cut-up and diagnostic cytology preparation work. It would suit someone with a strong background in Cellular Pathology (Histopathology), good organisation, and a positive approach to teamwork.

Key duties

• Carry out routine laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures and under supervision where required.
• Enter and maintain accurate records on the Laboratory Information Management System, ensuring compliance with national and local data standards.
• Support clinical colleagues as needed to help deliver an efficient service.
• Perform routine operational checks and maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Keep laboratory protocols for the assigned areas current and up to date.
• Undertake specialised technical tasks when required by the service.
• Work collaboratively with other hospital staff and departments as needed.

About the pathology partnership

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation delivering pathology services for Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

Established in May 2021, the partnership completed a major transformation programme between 2021 and 2024 to create a single laboratory network supported by one Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and one Quality Management System (QMS).

The network includes a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital, along with Essential Service Laboratories at the six other hospital sites served by the partnership.

• Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics
