Role overview

This opportunity sits within the research team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and contributes to the development of future patient care across The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. In this post, you will work as part of the Research and Innovation department and may also be asked to support the Generic, Cancer, and Women’s and Children’s teams when needed.

As an Assistant Research Practitioner, you will collaborate with Research Nurses, Midwives, and AHPs to help increase the number of eligible patients taking part in research studies relevant to their condition. The role is varied and offers the chance to support improvements in healthcare and treatment for future generations.

Informal visits to the department are strongly encouraged before shortlisting so you can learn more about the role and the team.

Main duties

  • Track and support patients throughout their participation in a research study.
  • Complete study-specific observations and measurements as required.
  • Help prepare for and deliver new studies.
  • Plan and organise your workload so role expectations are met.
  • Enter study data accurately and in line with requirements.
  • Carry out venepuncture and manage samples, including centrifuging where needed; training will be provided if required.
  • Identify suitable participants, obtain consent, and carry out follow-up according to each study protocol.
  • Maintain safety standards and ensure stock levels are kept in order for each study.
  • Provide wider team support with day-to-day tasks as needed.

Working for the organisation

Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment reflects a culture of compassionate care at the centre of everything the organisation does. Every colleague, whether clinical or non-clinical, plays an important part in making sure patients, families, and co-workers are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect.

Staff are expected to show compassion through both communication and behaviour: listening carefully, speaking clearly and kindly, and recognising the individual needs and circumstances of those receiving care.

Clear communication is essential to safe, high-quality healthcare. The organisation values people who take time to understand others, explain things in a helpful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.

By joining the team, you are expected to uphold these values and help ensure that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued in every interaction.
