About sKids

sKids has been designing after-school experiences for children across New Zealand since 1996. The organisation now supports more than 3,800 children each day at over 170 school sites, and continues to expand.

The role is suited to someone who enjoys creating a lively, engaging environment filled with activities such as art, science, sport, cooking, and group games. No two days are expected to be the same.

Role overview

As the Assistant Programme Manager for Matua Ngaru, you will be a key support person for the morning and afternoon programme. You will work a minimum of 10 hours per week, scheduled from Monday to Friday.

Morning before-school shifts generally run from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. After-school shifts generally run from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and availability from 2:30 pm onward is essential, although the exact finishing time may vary. Additional school holiday programme hours may also be available between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

What you will do

  • Assist the Programme Manager with the daily operation of the sKids programme and help keep everything running in a structured way.
  • Act as second-in-charge when needed, taking the lead confidently if the Programme Manager is absent.
  • Oversee and actively engage with large groups of children while maintaining a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable atmosphere.
  • Help plan and deliver organised activities such as arts and crafts, sport, games, and outings.
  • Support positive behaviour management by using calm, constructive guidance and applying consistent expectations.
  • Work alongside and mentor Programme Assistants during shifts so activities and routines stay on track.
  • Communicate positively with parents, caregivers, and school staff in a clear and approachable manner.
  • Help prepare materials, set up spaces, and pack down at the end of sessions so the programme runs smoothly.

Benefits

  • 50% discount on selected sKids programmes, which may be useful for your own children.
  • Referral bonus of up to $250 for each successful referral.
  • Better work-life balance with no weekend shifts and free time during the middle of the day.
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme for wellbeing support.
  • A friendly and encouraging team culture that values effort and celebrates success.

Eligibility and requirements

Applicants should have the legal right to work in New Zealand, such as citizenship or a valid visa. Reliable transport is needed to travel to the Matua Ngaru site.

Experience working with groups of children is important, including experience in OSCAR, childcare, coaching, teaching, camps, or a similar setting. You should feel comfortable taking a leadership role when required, making decisions, and stepping in with initiative.

The role also calls for experience handling behaviour in group settings while remaining calm, firm, and supportive. You should be a strong team player who can both contribute and lead when necessary, and communicate effectively with children, adults, parents, and school staff.

Applicants must be over 20 years old in line with the Social Security (Childcare Assistance) Regulations 2004.

Additional information

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the team after applying. This opportunity is intended to be a fun and engaging role where work feels enjoyable and active.

Safeguarding

sKids follows child protection and safeguarding practices for the children and young people in its care. All successful applicants will need to pass a satisfactory police record check and must have the right to work in New Zealand.
