Role overview
School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) is seeking an Assistant Director, Human Resources to join its leadership team. This opportunity is being recruited for both internal and external candidates at the same time.
The district is the third largest in British Columbia, supporting around 4,400 employees and 34,500 students across more than 70 schools. Its service area includes Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, and the villages of Anmore and Belcarra. The organization emphasizes a coordinated and collaborative way of working with students, families, community partners, the public, and employee groups. It also highlights a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect for varied lived experiences.
This senior HR role provides guidance to specialists working in benefits, workforce analytics, total rewards, wellness, and disability management. It is a key leadership position responsible for helping design and steer strategic HR programs, including district-wide attendance management, while supporting employees and improving organizational effectiveness. The role reports to the Executive Director of Human Resources.
Required education and experience
- An undergraduate degree in business administration, labour relations, human resources management, statistics, planning, or a closely related field.
- At least 7 years of progressive, strategic experience as a senior HR practitioner, ideally within a large public-sector, multi-union environment.
- Strong ability to analyze data and work with numbers, paired with solid collaboration and relationship-building skills.
- Proven experience in business change and program management, including familiarity with change management methods, communication approaches, and project management practices.
- Prior supervisory experience and evidence of developing strong, high-performing teams.
- History of building consultative and cooperative partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership, people management, coaching, and team-building ability in an operational setting, along with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Broad exposure to HR functions such as staffing budgets, compensation, benefits, disability management, attendance support, and position control is considered an asset.
- Experience working with employees at all levels in a unionized environment, preferably within the public sector.
- Knowledge of WorkSafe legislation and background in disability management.
- CPHR designation is an asset.
Additional information
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The annual salary range for this position is $128,274 to $160,342, and the role comes with a generous benefits package, including membership in the Municipal Pension Plan. The selected candidate must successfully pass two criminal record checks.
