Role overview
The Ministry of Education in New Zealand is seeking a permanent Senior Advisor based in Hamilton, Waikato. This is a full-time position of 38 hours per week, supporting strategic programmes that contribute to equitable and excellent educational outcomes for learners across Aotearoa.
In this role, you will help deliver services linked to student wellbeing, including the Healthy School Lunches programme, the ECE Food programme, and Ikura | Manaakitia te whare tangata (period products in schools). You will work closely with schools, kura, suppliers, and partner organisations in the Waikato region to help ensure tamariki receive nutritious lunches each school day.
The work is hands-on, fast-moving, and varied, with regular travel across the wider Waikato area. The team includes people from diverse backgrounds such as chefs, food business operators, relationship managers, contract specialists, and education sector professionals. Candidates with nutrition or dietetics qualifications and/or relevant experience in these areas are especially encouraged to apply.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is NZD 85,225 to 103,071 per year, plus KiwiSaver. The final salary offer will depend on the successful candidate’s experience and skills.
What you will do
You will provide specialist advice and practical support to schools, kura, suppliers, and partners so the Healthy School Lunches programme runs effectively across the region. A major part of the role is helping suppliers meet contractual expectations and supporting schools across different delivery models.
You will work collaboratively with key stakeholders, influence outcomes at senior levels, manage competing priorities, and contribute to the ongoing development and success of the programme. Because the role is highly dynamic, you’ll need to adapt quickly and stay flexible as needs change.
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone motivated by making a positive difference for ākonga and supporting their engagement and success in education. You should be confident offering high-quality advice, building strong working relationships, and navigating difficult conversations when needed.
A qualification in nutrition or dietetics, along with professional registration, is preferred. However, applicants with strong backgrounds in relationship management, conflict resolution, or food business management will also be considered.
Team and organisation
This position sits within National Services and the Strategic Programmes team, which supports regional delivery of education services across the country. The team ensures ākonga are fed in a way that supports learning, and the Healthy School Lunches programme serves eligible schools and kura throughout New Zealand.
You will work alongside Senior Advisors and Service Delivery Managers in a nationwide team that values collaboration, humour, and strong commitment to improved outcomes for learners. The wider Education Services group focuses on practice and guidance, integrated delivery, and monitoring and improvement to support student achievement, participation, and equity.
