The role involves working closely with teachers, families, outside specialists, and students to strengthen inclusive education, widen access to the curriculum, and help every learner succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
At the school, staff are expected to understand and reflect the mission of the Aga Khan Education services, which aims to help generations gain knowledge together with the spiritual wisdom needed to use that knowledge well and reach their fullest potential.
Key Responsibilities
Student Identification and Support
- Manage an active student caseload, delivering direct assessment, targeted intervention, and ongoing monitoring for learners with varied support needs.
- Spot and evaluate student needs through screening, analysis of data, referrals from teachers and parents, classroom observation, and both formal and informal assessment methods.
- Differentiate between learners who need short-term academic remediation and those with known or emerging special educational needs.
- Assess a broad range of learning differences and challenges, including literacy and numeracy difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia, as well as developmental, cognitive, physical, neurological, social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
Resource Management
- Oversee the organisation and practical use of learning resources, assistive technologies, and unit-based physical materials so they remain accessible and appropriate for all students.
- Develop and sustain relationships with external specialists and service providers when student assessment or intervention needs go beyond what the school can fully address.
Monitoring and Records
- Keep student assessment files, intervention notes, progress records, and support plans accurate, confidential, and current.
- Record parent meetings, support sessions, review discussions, and programme changes to support consistency and accountability.
- Handle Learning Support enrolment paperwork and parent agreements, while tracking compliance with the agreed support conditions.
Parent and Stakeholder Communication
- Maintain strong family partnerships through regular updates on student progress, intervention approaches, and next steps.
- Involve parents in goal setting, review meetings, and shared decisions that support stronger outcomes and better collaboration between home and school.
- Act as a primary contact for families, teachers, school leaders, and external professionals on matters related to inclusion and student support.
Team Leadership, Collaboration, and Development
- Work alongside teachers and school leadership to strengthen inclusive practice and improve support for diverse learners across the school.
- Plan and facilitate professional learning that builds staff capability in differentiation, inclusive teaching, and learning support methods.
- Guide teachers in using digital systems and tools for tracking, recording, and referring students with special educational needs.
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure all work aligns with school policies and applicable rules relating to inclusion, safeguarding, assessment, and special educational needs.
- Coordinate with external professionals and agencies to make sure their recommendations are implemented, followed up, and reviewed.
- Prepare reports, summaries, and recommendations for leadership, parents, and other stakeholders when needed.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Education or a related discipline such as Psychology or Educational Psychology, together with training or practical experience in special educational needs or inclusive education.
- A postgraduate qualification in Special Education, Inclusive Education, or a closely related area is preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience teaching and/or supporting learners with diverse needs in a mainstream or inclusive setting.
- Proven ability to design and deliver interventions for special educational needs, including support for literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional or behavioural concerns.
- Experience assessing learner needs and developing, implementing, and reviewing Individual Education Plans or similar support plans.
- Demonstrated success working with teachers, parents, and external professionals to improve student progress and inclusion.
- Experience coordinating learning support within a school, department, or structured programme, including contributing to staff guidance or professional development.
- Strong digital proficiency, including Microsoft Office, email, and digital tools for data handling, reporting, and student monitoring.
- Solid knowledge of assessment tools and methods used to identify and support special educational needs; training or certification in specialist assessments would be an advantage.
- Ability to plan and apply suitable support strategies for learners with literacy and numeracy difficulties, attention and executive function challenges, sensory or physical impairments, and social, emotional, behavioural, and developmental conditions, including autism.
- Good understanding of examination board and national assessment requirements such as UNEB, Cambridge, and IB, especially access arrangements and accommodations for learners with special educational needs.
- Ability to create and maintain effective digital systems for monitoring student progress, interventions, and outcomes.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to produce clear reports and communicate effectively with students, families, teachers, and outside professionals.
