Role overview
The firefighter role is centered on handling aircraft and building fire incidents, medical situations, hazardous material events, and other emergencies occurring within airport premises. The position is focused on protecting passengers, crew members, airport staff, and property through fire suppression, rescue support, and emergency medical assistance.
Core duties
In this role, you will be expected to respond quickly to emergencies on airport property, control and extinguish fires using appropriate firefighting media such as water, foam, and dry chemical agents, and carry out rescue work in smoke-filled or unsafe environments. You will also provide first aid and basic life support until medical professionals take over, and help move patients to medical care when required.
Operational preparedness
The job includes checking and maintaining firefighting vehicles, extinguishers, PPE, and other emergency equipment on a daily basis. You will be responsible for keeping emergency supplies stocked and ready, joining emergency drills, ICAO-required training, and fire simulations, and maintaining accurate logs for incidents, training, and shifts for audit purposes.
Compliance and reporting
All activities must follow applicable local, state, and federal firefighting and emergency response regulations, as well as established Standard Operating Procedures. You will need to identify hazards during patrols and inspections, ensure corrective action is taken without delay, and prepare clear incident reports, equipment records, and other documentation as needed.
Coordination and stakeholders
This position requires close coordination with airport operations, medical teams, external emergency agencies, the Duty Manager, ATC, and airport authorities during incidents and drills. Key internal stakeholders include the Duty Manager, ARFF Airport Operations Team, Airport Security, Emergency Medical Services, ARFF Crew Members, Engineering & Maintenance Team, and the HSE Team. External coordination may involve local fire services, airlines, ground handling companies, ARFF equipment suppliers and service providers, insurance companies, community leaders, and civil aviation authorities.
Technical competencies
Hands-on capability with ARFF equipment operation and upkeep, emergency response readiness, firefighting methods, incident handling, pre-flight inspection procedures, quality assurance practices, and regulatory compliance is important for success in this role.
Qualifications and experience
A Diploma in Fire Fighting Technology or an equivalent qualification is required. Certification from an accredited firefighting academy is mandatory. The role calls for 2 to 3 years of firefighting experience, ideally in aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) operations.
