BRAC International is a major non-profit organization focused on helping people and communities affected by poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice. Established in 1972 by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, it operates as the world’s largest NGO and now has a presence in 16 countries across Asia and Africa. Its international microfinance work began in 2002, and outside Bangladesh it currently runs operations in Tanzania, Myanmar, Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ghana, collectively serving more than 800,000 clients, 96% of whom are women.

Role Overview

The Financial Controller will be responsible for safeguarding the integrity of financial information and strengthening the control environment across a decentralized operation in Tanzania. Working in a Temenos T24-based environment, this role ensures that financial records remain accurate, auditable, and useful for decision-making from branch-level transactions through to consolidated reporting for the Board and regulators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the month-end and period-end closing cycle, ensuring reports are produced on time, accurately, and in a format suitable for audit review.
  • Maintain robust internal controls, reliable data, and sound governance practices throughout the organization.
  • Review financial performance, analyze variances, and translate results into practical recommendations for management.
  • Improve fraud detection and prevention controls, monitor financial exposures, and follow through on corrective measures.
  • Submit financial reports promptly to management, the Board, regulators, lenders, and other relevant parties.
  • Oversee the financial governance aspects of procurement and contracting activities.
  • Ensure procurement decisions follow policy, approval requirements, and value-for-money standards.
  • Reinforce controls over organizational spending and vendor oversight.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and annual financial planning activities.
  • Track performance against budgets and strategic targets.
  • Prepare scenario-based analysis and financial insights to inform decisions and capital planning.
  • Ensure adherence to tax, VAT, statutory, regulatory, and financial reporting obligations.
  • Handle engagement with auditors, tax specialists, regulators, rating agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate audits and drive timely closure of audit issues and recommendations.
  • Guide the optimization of finance systems, automation efforts, and reporting improvements.
  • Promote effective use of T24, Power BI, and other digital solutions to improve efficiency, control, and decision support.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of finance processes and management information systems.
  • Build, manage, and develop a capable finance and controllership team.
  • Support team development, succession planning, performance management, and leadership capability building.
  • Encourage a workplace culture centered on accountability, high standards, collaboration, and ongoing improvement.

Safeguarding

The Financial Controller is expected to help establish and maintain a safe working environment, champion safeguarding principles within the team, and follow the reporting process whenever a reportable incident occurs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in finance or controllership is required, including at least 5 years in a Financial Controller, Deputy Financial Controller, or Head of Controls role within a large bank, microfinance institution, or non-bank financial institution with a portfolio above TZS 150 billion.
  • Experience with a core banking system, IFRS 9, Bank of Tanzania regulations, and Tanzania Revenue Authority compliance is essential.
  • Strong capability in Advanced Excel, Power BI, and SQL is required; knowledge of RPA and Python is an added advantage.
  • A professional accounting qualification such as CPA (T), ACCA, ACA, or an equivalent credential is required; an MBA is preferred.

Key Competencies

  • Proven leadership ability, strong stakeholder management, and confidence in handling difficult situations.
  • High personal integrity, strong analytical discipline, and a firm approach to control weakness.
